Fuse wire, cartridges and no RCD

In rural homes that have not been rewired for some years, the original fuse box can still be in service: rewireable fuses holding a strand of wire, or cartridge fuses in a wooden or metal case. Neither gives RCD protection, the device that cuts the power within a fraction of a second if someone touches a live part or a cable is damaged.

Replacing that kind of board is where a new consumer unit makes the biggest difference. Before fitting it, we test the insulation of each circuit, because old cables sometimes need repair first. If they do, you get the findings and a price in writing, and nothing goes ahead until you agree.

  • RCD protection for every circuit

Power that leaves the house

Properties in small hamlets often have more than one building on the supply: a workshop, a stable block, a garden office or a detached garage. Each is usually fed by a cable from the house board, sometimes buried, sometimes clipped along a wall or strung overhead. Those runs are easy to forget and are often older than the board itself.

When we change your consumer unit, the outbuilding feed gets its own correctly rated protection, and we check whether the far end needs a small board of its own. Stables and damp workshops are exactly where RCD protection matters most. Every building we test is listed on the one certificate.

  • Outbuilding feeds rated and protected
  • Remote boards priced in the quote
  • Buried and overhead cables tested
  • One certificate for every building
Getting to you

Reaching Clayhill

We usually head along the coast to Hastings, then north on the A28 before turning east towards Beckley, though traffic sometimes sends us another way. Our quotes are fixed and based on pictures of the board, with the date left to whichever suits you. Call us if a fault has cut your power, as reaching you the same day is then the aim.

Yes, as long as the cable feeding it is the right size for the load and properly protected at the house end. For stables we strongly favour RCD protection on every circuit out there, and often a small metal board inside the building itself. We price that part separately so you can decide.

Rewireable fuses are not automatically dangerous, but they give no protection against electric shock and are easy to refit with the wrong size of wire. They also suggest the wiring behind them has not been tested for a long while. Replacing the box with an RCD protected unit, tested throughout, deals with both problems.

Someone needs to let us in at the start and be around at the end, when we show you the new board and how to reset it. In between, the board change itself usually lasts four to six hours. Please leave outbuildings unlocked so we can test those circuits as well as the ones in the house.
