Village houses of every age

Flint cottages and later family houses

Compton has the mix you would expect in a long established Downs village: older flint and brick cottages with later houses added over the years. Each age tends to bring its own kind of fuse box, from wooden backed boards with wire fuses to plastic units where a single RCD covers every circuit, so one earth fault anywhere can cut power to the whole house.

Older cottages often have lighting circuits with no earth conductor, which matters wherever metal light fittings are used. We test every circuit before and after the change, tell you plainly what we find, and price any extra work separately so you can decide what to do and when.

  • Rewireable fuses replaced
  • Single RCD boards upgraded
  • Unearthed lighting identified
  • Extra work priced separately

Storage heaters, Economy 7 and a second meter

Many homes in the Downs have never been connected to mains gas, and some heat with electric storage heaters on a cheaper night rate. That usually means a two-rate meter and often a second fuse box or timeswitch feeding the heaters and immersion, wired in a different decade from the main board and rarely labelled.

We replace both boards or tidy them into one neat arrangement, keeping the off peak circuits on their own supply so your tariff still works. If you plan to swap storage heaters for a heat pump in the next few years, tell us now so we can leave the right space.

  • Off peak circuits kept separate
  • Timeswitches and contactors checked
  • Second boards replaced or tidied
  • Space planned for a future heat pump

No. The heaters charge when your meter switches to the night rate, and that is controlled by the meter or a timeswitch rather than the board. We keep those circuits on the off peak supply, test them like every other circuit, and check that the timeswitch or contactor still operates before we leave.

Sometimes. If the second box is an off peak board, it needs to stay on its own supply unless you change your tariff or heating, but it can still be replaced with a modern unit. If it is simply an extra board added for an extension, we can usually bring everything onto one new consumer unit. Photos of both tell us which.

A typical board change takes four to six hours, with the supply switched off for much of it while we disconnect, fit and test. We tell you when we are about to switch off, keep the fridge and freezer off for as short a time as we can, and have everything back on before we leave.
