Fuse boxes that have lived through several changes

In houses built or rewired in the second half of the twentieth century, the original board was often a fuse box with rewireable or cartridge fuses. Many were later swapped for plastic consumer units with a single RCD, or extended with a separate box for a shower or cooker. Each step solved a problem at the time but left a board that is now crowded.

We replace the lot with one metal consumer unit, bringing separate shower, cooker and garage boxes back onto it where the circuits allow. We test each circuit, check the earthing and bonding, and register the job with Building Control as Part P work, which means the paperwork is ready when you come to sell.

  • Single RCD boards upgraded
  • Shower and cooker boxes merged
  • Earthing and bonding checked
  • Building Control notification included

Why newer consumer units are made of metal

Since January 2016 the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. Plastic boards fitted before then are not illegal and do not have to come out, but they offer less containment if a loose connection overheats. Plenty of village homes had plastic units fitted in the years before the change.

If your plastic unit is in good order and passes testing, we will say so. If it leaves some circuits without RCD cover, shows scorch marks, or has no space for what you need, a new board makes sense. A dual RCD unit starts from £425, and an EICR can be added for £99 at the same visit.

No. The 2016 requirement for non-combustible enclosures applies to new installations, not boards already in place. An existing plastic unit can stay if it is in good order and passes testing. We recommend replacing it when it is damaged, overloaded or lacking RCD protection, or when other changes you are making need a new board anyway.

Usually, yes. If the shower cable can reach the new consumer unit, we give it its own protected way on the main board and remove the extra box. If it cannot, we explain what is needed. Either way the shower circuit is tested and the cable size checked against the rating of the shower.

Your circuits are split into two groups, each protected by its own RCD. If one circuit develops an earth fault, its group switches off while the other stays on. It is a good, affordable standard from £425. If you would rather a single fault only affects its own circuit, a full RCBO board starts from £625.
