Village with its own station

Fuse Box Replacement in Stonegate

Stonegate has something many rural villages lack: a railway station carrying its name, on the line between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings. The village lies in Ticehurst parish, north east of Heathfield, and when we swap out a fuse box here for a fixed price we keep in mind the chargepoint a household may want next.

From the village out to the lanes

Stonegate is a rural village rather than a town, so homes range from older cottages to twentieth century houses and properties set well back along the surrounding lanes. Many will have had their electrics added to over the decades, and it is common to find a consumer unit from the 1980s or 1990s with a single RCD, or none at all, protecting every circuit.

A new board separates those circuits so one fault no longer cuts everything. Dual RCD boards start at £425 for 6 ways, and full RCBO boards, which protect each circuit individually, start at £625. Within 48 hours an Electrical Installation Certificate lands in your inbox.

Leaving room for a home chargepoint

In a rural village, most journeys still start in the car, even with a station nearby, and more households are switching to electric. A home chargepoint draws a heavy, steady load for hours at a time, and it needs its own protected circuit. Hooking one up to an ageing fuse box, with no RCD protection and no spare ways, is not a sound idea.

When we fit your new board, we can leave a labelled spare way for the charger, record your main fuse rating and earthing arrangement, and note it all for whoever installs the chargepoint. If the supply itself needs uprating, that is arranged through UK Power Networks.

  • Spare way left for a charger
  • Main fuse rating recorded
  • Earthing noted for installers
  • Supply upgrades via the network
Getting to you

Getting to Stonegate

Coming from Brighton & Hove, we tend to travel via Heathfield and then on country roads to the north east, though the exact route depends on where in the parish you live. Photo quotes come back quickly and most jobs are booked a few days ahead. When the power has gone and stays off, give us a call; a same day visit is what we aim for.

If your board is old, has no RCD protection or has no spare ways, then yes, it makes sense to replace it first. The chargepoint installer then connects to a modern, fully tested installation. We leave a spare way, note your main fuse rating and earthing, and give you a certificate you can pass straight on.

It depends on the rating of the service fuse, which is usually marked on the cutout near your meter, and on what else the house runs. A photo of that cutout helps. Many chargers can also be set to limit their draw. If the supply is genuinely too small, the upgrade request goes to UK Power Networks rather than to us.

Most three bedroom homes have somewhere between six and ten circuits once lighting, sockets, cooker, shower and immersion are counted, and we like to add a spare way for the future. A 10 way board is the usual answer, at £495 with dual RCD, while a full RCBO version with 10 to 12 ways costs £695. Your photos let us confirm.
