North east of Crowborough, TN3

Fuse Box Replacement in Danegate

Out in Rotherfield parish, north east of Crowborough, the hamlet of Danegate is made up of a small number of country homes. Rural supplies like these often need as much attention to the earthing as to the fuse box. Fitting a new board costs a fixed amount, and surge protection is part of the standard kit.

Every house with its own wiring story

As a hamlet rather than a village, Danegate has no estate of matching houses to compare against. Each home tends to have its own history: a cottage extended over the decades, a later house built on its own plot, perhaps a converted building. That usually shows up at the meter cupboard as an older fuse box, mixed cable types and circuits added one at a time by different hands.

To quote, we ask for pictures showing the board and meter along with the main earth connection. For most homes this size, dual RCD protection across 10 ways from £495, or full RCBO protection on 8 ways from £625, will do, and testing and inspecting the whole property is included in the work.

Earth rods and TT systems

When the earth comes from a rod in the garden

Rural properties fed by overhead lines are often on a TT earthing arrangement, where the house relies on its own earth electrode rather than an earth provided by the network. On a TT system it is the consumer unit's RCDs that carry most of the load when something goes wrong, which means a dated fuse box without any RCD protection leaves the installation much more exposed than the same board would in a town house.

Every board change includes a resistance reading on the earth electrode, a check of the rod, clamp and earthing conductor, and protection configured for a TT system. If the reading is poor or the connection has corroded, we tell you and price the fix before going any further.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • Rod, clamp and conductor checked
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Corroded connections flagged
Getting to you

Reaching Danegate from the coast

From Brighton, our installers take the A27 to Lewes, then the A26 north through Uckfield to Crowborough and on to the hamlet. When you text us images of both the fuse box and the meter, we quote a fixed sum and agree a date with you. A phone call is the way to go when the power has gone, and our aim is to be at your door that same day.

The rod is only part of it. On a TT supply, the earth rod alone usually cannot clear a fault quickly enough, so RCD protection on every circuit is what makes the installation safe. We test the rod's resistance and check that each RCD trips within the required time before we sign off the certificate.

Yes. TN3 addresses carry a Tunbridge Wells post town, but Danegate is in Rotherfield parish in East Sussex, and we cover the whole county with no travel charge. Brighton and Danegate share the same fixed prices, beginning at £425 for a dual RCD board with 6 ways.

A typical board change lasts between four and six hours, with the electricity off for a large part of it. Keep the fridge and freezer closed and they will normally hold their temperature. We confirm a start time in advance so you can plan around work calls, school runs or anyone at home who relies on electrical equipment.
