Shipley parish hamlet, rural supply

Fuse Box Replacement in Whitehall

Whitehall is a small cluster of homes in the countryside of Shipley parish to the south east of Billingshurst. Out here the electricity often arrives on overhead lines and the earth comes from a rod in the ground, so we test that earth properly before any new consumer unit goes on the wall.

Cottages, farmhouses and later rebuilds in a small hamlet

As a hamlet, Whitehall has no estate of matching houses. Expect a mix: older cottages and farmhouses, some extended more than once, alongside the odd twentieth century house or bungalow. Each tends to have its own electrical history, with a board that may be a wooden backed fuse box, a 1980s metal unit or a plastic board from a past kitchen job.

Extensions are where we look hardest. A kitchen or garden room added years later may have been fed from a spare fuse with no RCD at all. We trace every circuit back to the board, test each one and size the new unit for the whole house, with a couple of spare ways left for later.

Why a TT earth changes the job

Many rural properties are on a TT supply, meaning UK Power Networks provides no earth and the house relies on its own rod driven into the soil. If that rod corrodes or the ground around it dries out in summer, the earth can weaken without anyone noticing. On a TT system, RCD protection is what disconnects a fault quickly, so the board and the rod have to work together.

Our first job on site is to test how well the rod is earthing; a poor reading is reported to you straight away, with a price for a new rod, because we will not fit a board to a weak earth. Overhead lines are also more exposed to surges from nearby lightning, one reason Type 2 surge protection comes on every board we fit.

  • Earth rod tested first
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Weak earth flagged, not ignored
  • Type 2 surge protection included

Reaching Whitehall from Brighton & Hove

Whitehall lies north west of Brighton, out in the countryside. Our usual way in is up the A23, west on the A272 and then through the lanes of Shipley parish, a trip that adds nothing to your bill. Pictures of the board and the meter, sent by text, are what we price from, and if the power keeps tripping, phone in our working hours and we will look to have someone in Whitehall the same day.

It means your house provides its own earth through a rod in the ground rather than taking one from the network. The new board must have RCD protection on every circuit, which all our boards do, and we test the rod's resistance before and after. If the old rod is corroded or its reading is too high, we explain what needs doing before we go ahead.

No. A hamlet in Shipley parish is priced exactly like a flat in Hove. Prices begin at £425 for dual RCD protection across 6 ways and £625 for a full set of RCBOs across 8 ways, and both include surge protection, a test of the whole property and the certificate. The quote is fixed once we have seen your photos.

In almost every case, yes. A board change is normally done within four to six hours, while a full freezer left shut holds its temperature far longer than that. We tell you roughly when the power will go off and when it should be back, so you can plan around it. If you work from home, charge your laptop and phone the night before.
