Houses that grew one appliance at a time

North Heath's homes are a rural mix, and many have been updated in stages. Each new electric shower, cooker, immersion heater or garage supply was often given its own little switch fuse unit beside the original board, because there was no room inside it. Decades later, the meter cupboard can look like a row of separate boxes.

Each of those boxes is another point of failure, usually with outdated protection. Bringing them together on one board, from £425 for a dual RCD unit or £625 for full RCBO protection, gives every circuit modern cover and makes the cupboard far easier to understand.

Sorting out the cables between meter and board

The cables from your meter to the board, called meter tails, carry the full load of the house. Where extra boxes have been added, the tails are sometimes split through joint boxes or doubled up at the meter, and older tails can be undersized for what a household uses today. All of that gets checked during the board change.

New tails of the right size are fitted with the board. If there is no isolator switch between the meter and your installation, your energy supplier or UK Power Networks can usually arrange one, which makes future work easier. We tell you if it is worth asking.

  • Meter tails renewed to size
  • Joint boxes removed
  • Isolator advice given
  • Main earth checked at the meter
Getting to you

North Heath via the A283

Our usual route is west along the A27 to Shoreham, up the A283 through Steyning and Storrington to Pulborough, then north towards Billingshurst. The journey costs you nothing, wherever you are in Sussex. Texting us shots of the board, with the meter cupboard too, brings a fixed quote; should the supply have gone, phone instead, and we will endeavour to see you that day.

Still not sure?

In most cases, yes. The circuits from each box are brought into a single new consumer unit, each with its own protective device. Occasionally a separate unit is worth keeping, for example for a detached garage or an off peak supply, and we explain why if that applies to you. The fixed price covers the consolidation.

Electric showers draw a lot of current, so we check the shower's rating, the cable size and the length of the run. If the cable is right, the shower gets its own correctly rated breaker on the new board. If it is undersized, which we do find on older installations, we tell you and price the fix before going ahead.

Usually, and often with room to spare, because one consumer unit replaces several boxes. We check the photos for depth and clearance before quoting. If the current spot is cramped, damp or hard to reach, we may suggest moving it, which adds £250 when it is done alongside a new board.
