What sits behind the front doors at Halfway Bridge

As a hamlet rather than a village, Halfway Bridge is a handful of homes rather than streets of them, mostly older rural cottages and houses along and just off the main road. Properties like these have usually been rewired in stages over the decades, so the fuse box we find can be a patchwork: a rewireable unit, a later add on board and the odd circuit that answers to neither.

We bring all of that back into one board. Many smaller homes are well served by a dual RCD unit from £425, while going to RCBOs throughout, from £625, gives each circuit its own protection so a single fault no longer plunges half the house into darkness.

  • Old add on boards combined
  • Every circuit traced and labelled
  • Rewireable fuses removed
  • Full test before handover

Greensand ground and why we measure the earth twice

The country between Petworth and Midhurst lies largely on the Lower Greensand, a sandy, free draining soil. Where a rural home has its own earth rod, which is common on overhead supplies, dry sandy ground tends to give higher earth resistance readings than heavier clay, and those readings can climb further in a long dry summer.

On a TT supply the RCDs in the new board do the protective work, so a poor rod matters. We measure the electrode before we start and again once the board is in. If the reading is too high, we say so plainly and explain how a longer or additional rod would put it right.

Getting to you

Getting to Halfway Bridge

Because Halfway Bridge sits right on the A272, it ranks among the easier places nearby to reach: from Brighton & Hove we head west on the A27 and up the A283 to Petworth, then a few minutes on towards Midhurst. We do not charge for the drive. Photos of the board sent by text will get you a fixed price, while a call is best when the power is off, as we aim to get to you that day.

Only if your home has its own earth rod. The rod relies on contact with damp ground to carry fault current away, and loose, free draining sand holds less moisture than clay, which can push the resistance up. Guidance treats readings above about 200 ohms as possibly unstable, so that is the figure we work to when we test.

Fitting usually takes between 4 and 6 hours, much of it with the power off, because the old board has to come out and each circuit is tested once the new one is in. We confirm the start time in advance so you can charge phones and plan around the freezer, which will be fine if kept shut.

Yes. A standalone EICR covers the earth electrode as well as the rest of the installation, with a price from £175 for a small property up to £350 for a large one. If you decide to replace the board as well, the EICR drops to £99 when it is booked alongside the new board.
