Lanes, trees and generous gardens

Forestside is a hamlet, so there is no village centre, just homes set along lanes with trees close by. Properties out here tend to have generous plots, and over time those plots gain garages, sheds, studios and workshops. The house board ends up feeding more than the house, often through cables and connections that were added long after it was fitted.

Before quoting, we like to know everything the board supplies. Photos of the meter, the board itself and any outbuildings help us settle on the right size, be it a dual RCD board with 10 ways at £495 or an RCBO board with 10 to 12 ways at £695.

Garden offices and studios need a proper supply

A garden office, studio or gym is a popular addition where homes have the space. Each one needs power for lighting, sockets and often an electric heater, and that supply has to come from the house board. Done properly, it is a suitably sized armoured cable on its own protected circuit. Done badly, it is an extension lead through a window or a spur off the kitchen sockets.

If you are planning a garden building, replacing the board first means a spare way is ready and the protection suits the new circuit. We can advise on the cable size your builder will need, and make sure the circuit is tested and recorded on your certificate.

Before the base goes down, ideally. The supply cable usually runs underground from the house, so its route, any ducting and the board it comes from are easier to sort early. We can replace the house board with a spare way ready and advise on the cable size, so the connection is straightforward when the studio arrives.

No. Whatever the PO9 postcode suggests, Forestside belongs to West Sussex, in Stoughton parish and Chichester District, and we never charge for travel within Sussex. Here, as in Brighton or Worthing, £625 is the starting price for a full RCBO board.

Someone needs to be there to let us in at the start and to go through the results with us at the end. Between those points you can carry on as you like, bearing in mind the power will be off for much of the 4 to 6 hours a typical board takes.
