Houses with gardens, garages and room to spread

Being on the outskirts, Doomsday Green has a looser layout than the streets nearer the town centre, and homes tend to come with more outside space. That usually means more on the electrics: outside lights, a garage, a shed with sockets, perhaps a pond pump. Over the years these get added to whatever board was there at the time.

We start by finding out what every circuit actually feeds, because additions are not always labelled. The new board then gives each one its own protected way. A full RCBO board starts at £625 for 8 ways, or £695 for 10 to 12 ways.

Garden offices, workshops and outbuildings

A garden office or workshop is usually fed by a sub main: a cable from the house to a small board in the outbuilding. Where these were put in years ago, some were run in cable never meant for burial, or protected by nothing more than a fuse in the house. A board change is the right time to look at it properly.

We test the cable to the outbuilding, give it the correct protection at the new board and check the earthing at the far end, which sometimes needs its own arrangement. If the outbuilding board is past its best too, we include it in the quote from your photos.

  • Sub main tested end to end
  • Correct protection at the house

Usually, yes. A garden office needs a properly sized cable from the house, its own protective device at the main board and, normally, a small board in the office itself. Heaters and computers soon add up, so tell us what you plan to run and we will check the house supply can carry it.

Not always. If it is a modern unit in good condition, we test it and leave it alone. If it has old rewireable fuses, no RCD, or signs of damp, it is worth replacing at the same time. Send a photo of it along with the house board and we will quote for both together.

Water getting into an outdoor fitting or socket is one of the commonest causes of RCD trips. On an older board, one RCD may cover most of the house, so a wet garden light can take everything off. We find the fault first, then the new board keeps outside circuits separate.
