Old Street, newer roads

From timber frames to twentieth century semis

Bramber's oldest homes line The Street, where centuries old timber framing and brick sit close together, alongside houses built during the last century. That spread means almost any kind of board can turn up here, from a cast iron switch and fuse in a cupboard to a 1990s plastic unit with a single RCD covering every circuit, which can leave the whole house dark after one small fault.

Old single RCD boards are a common cause of nuisance tripping. A full RCBO board gives each circuit its own protection, so a faulty kettle no longer takes the freezer and the lights with it. For most homes here an 8 way RCBO board from £625 is a sensible choice, or larger where a kitchen extension has added circuits.

  • Single RCD boards replaced
  • Each circuit on its own RCBO
  • Old cast iron switchgear removed
  • Every circuit tested and recorded

Working gently in Bramber's historic core

St Mary's House and the castle ruins give Bramber its character, and a number of the older buildings in the village are listed. A straight swap in the same position rarely touches historic fabric, but where new cable routes are needed through old timber, lath and plaster or past exposed beams, we plan them with you first and you can check with Horsham District Council if consent might apply.

We use surface trunking or existing voids rather than chasing old walls wherever possible, and we photograph the position of the old board so any making good can be matched. Your Electrical Installation Certificate and the Building Control notification under Part P are handled for you.

  • Routes planned around beams and lath
  • Minimal chasing of historic walls

Bramber questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

It should not. The new board normally goes where the old one was, and modern consumer units are compact. If you would rather it was out of sight, we can talk about a cupboard position, and relocation with a new board adds £250. We avoid altering historic fabric and will tell you if anything ought to be checked with the council first.

Older split load boards put several circuits behind one RCD, so a small earth leakage on any of them switches the lot off. Damp, a tired appliance or an outdoor socket are typical causes. A full RCBO board isolates only the faulty circuit, and our testing usually pinpoints where the leakage is coming from.

The supply is off for most of the time the board is being changed, typically 4 to 6 hours for a standard home. We agree a start time with you, leave fridges and freezers until last where possible, and restore power as soon as each circuit has passed its tests.
