Cottages and later houses

Older Cade Street houses and where their fuse boxes ended up

Cade Street has older cottages and houses alongside later homes. In older properties the fuse box often sits wherever the supply first arrived decades ago: high above a front door, in the cupboard under the stairs, or inside a kitchen unit. Those spots made sense once, but they can be hard to reach in a hurry and awkward to work on.

Every replacement here includes a full test of the installation and Type 2 surge protection. Prices start at £425 for six ways under dual RCDs, with ten ways at £495; the certificate is emailed to you within 48 hours, and the work is reported to Building Control as Part P requires.

Moving the board

Relocating a fuse box while it is being replaced

Changing the board is the cheapest moment to move it. The circuits are already being disconnected, so extending them to a better position adds far less than doing it as a separate job. Common reasons are a kitchen refit, a board too high to reach safely, or one tucked in a cupboard that gets damp or packed with coats.

Relocation alongside a new board adds £250. If your consumer unit is modern and only needs moving, a standalone relocation is £395. The meter and the supplier's cut out usually stay put; moving those is a job for UK Power Networks or your energy supplier, and we can explain how that works.

  • Relocation with new board, add £250
  • Standalone relocation £395
  • Easier reach in an emergency
  • Meter questions explained

Short moves work best, such as from a cupboard to the next wall, or from high above a door down to a reachable height nearby. Longer moves are possible but mean longer meter tails and more work on each circuit. Photos of where it is now and where you want it let us judge what is practical.

Some making good is likely. Circuits have to be extended to the new position, which can mean short runs of trunking or cables chased into plaster. We keep this as tidy as we can and agree the route with you first, but filling and painting afterwards is normally left to you or your decorator.

For new homes, accessibility guidance in the Building Regulations covers the height of switches and controls, and we apply the same thinking in existing houses where we can, so the board is reachable without a stepladder. What matters most is that you can get to it quickly in the dark, and that it stays dry and clear.
