A handful of homes

Homes well away from the main road

With only a handful of properties, Hooksway has no typical house. What the homes share is distance: from the main road, from neighbours and often from the network's own earth. Rural properties like these were frequently wired and rewired by different people, and the fuse box can be anything from an old fuse carrier board to a plastic unit from the early 2000s.

Whatever its age, the old board makes way for a modern consumer unit, every circuit is put through a full test, and Type 2 surge protection comes fitted as standard. We also take care of the Building Control notification, and your Electrical Installation Certificate follows by email inside 48 hours.

  • Any age of fuse box replaced
  • Full test of every circuit

Earth rods and TT supplies

The earth rod outside, and why we measure it

Many rural homes are not given an earth by the network. Instead, each installation is earthed through its own rod set into the ground, an arrangement known as TT. How well that rod works depends on the soil, its depth and its condition, and thin soil over chalk can be harder to earth well than heavy clay, especially in a dry summer.

With a TT supply, the RCDs in the board do the vital job of disconnecting a fault, so every circuit must be RCD protected and the rod's resistance must be low enough. We measure it during testing, and if the reading is poor or the rod is damaged we explain your options.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • Every circuit RCD protected
  • Rod and clamp condition checked
  • Clear advice if readings are high

Hooksway questions

Asked in Hooksway

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Look near the meter for a green and yellow earth cable. If it connects to the network's cable or the main fuse housing, you probably have a network earth. If it heads out through the wall or floor towards a rod in the ground, often under a small cover, the supply is likely TT. A photo of the area lets us confirm.

We explain the reading and what it means. Often the answer is an extra or replacement rod, a better connection, or a new clamp where the old one has corroded. If the fix is straightforward we quote it there and then, so your new board is not left relying on an earth that falls short.

Clear a path to the fuse box and meter, and let us know about gates, rough access and where the van can park. It also helps to know what depends on electricity in your home, such as a water pump, treatment plant or medical equipment, so we can plan when the power goes off.
