Elsted's houses and their electrics
Elsted mixes older village houses and cottages with homes built more recently. Many of the older properties were first wired for a few lights and sockets and have been added to ever since. The result is often a board with no spare capacity and circuits sharing ways they were never designed to share, which makes tracing a fault harder than it should be.
Our fixed price includes tracing and testing each of those circuits before the new board goes in. If testing shows a circuit is unsafe to reconnect, we explain why and quote the repair, so the decision stays with you. Everything else is labelled clearly on the new board.
- Overloaded ways separated
- Each circuit tested first
- Repairs quoted, never assumed
- Clear labelling throughout

Checking the earth rod at an Elsted home
Overhead lines feed many rural properties in this part of West Sussex, and lots of them use TT earthing, where the house relies on its own earth rod in the ground rather than an earth taken from the supply. That rod is easy to forget about. It may sit under a cover in the garden, buried in a border or hidden behind a shed, and it is rarely checked between electricians' visits.
Testing the rod's resistance and the earthing conductor connection is part of every board change we carry out. A TT supply needs RCD protection on every circuit, and a board with full RCBO protection, priced from £625, gives it circuit by circuit. If the rod reading is poor, we explain the options and price any remedial work before going ahead.
- Earth electrode resistance measured
- Earthing conductor checked
- RCD protection on every circuit
- Remedial work priced first
Arranging your Elsted board change
With Elsted west of Midhurst, we usually reach it through Midhurst, whether we have come along the A272 from Petworth or up the A286 from Chichester. A text with pictures showing the board and meter brings back a fixed quote and a date. Should the board keep tripping or you notice a burning smell, ring us straight away; we will make every effort to come out that day.

Asked in Elsted
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691It is usually within a few metres of where the supply enters the house, sometimes under a small inspection cover. We do not need to dig it up to test it: we measure its resistance from the main earthing terminal at the board. If we cannot find the connection or it looks corroded, we will show you what we have found.
With TT earthing, the earth rod alone usually cannot pass enough fault current to make a fuse or breaker operate quickly. An RCD detects the small leakage of current to earth and disconnects within a fraction of a second. That is why we fit RCD protection to every circuit on a TT supply, ideally with an RCBO for each one.
In most cases, yes. If the space is dry, reachable and big enough for the new board, it can go in the same spot, which keeps the job simple. If you would rather move it, for example out of a cramped or awkward cupboard, relocation adds £250 when done with the board change.
