Heyshott homes and the boards inside them

Heyshott's houses range from old cottages and farmhouses to homes built during the last century, and that mix shows up behind the meter cupboard door. In some we find rewireable fuse carriers, in others an early plastic consumer unit with one RCD covering everything, and quite often a board that has grown sideways as kitchens, garages and extensions were wired in over the years.

Whatever we find, the approach is the same. Each circuit is traced, tested and labelled in turn, any fault is raised with you before it goes near the new board, and your Electrical Installation Certificate lands in your inbox within 48 hours. Most boards are fitted in 4 to 6 hours, so the power is usually back on the same day.

  • Single RCD boards upgraded

Planning a heat pump in Heyshott

Plenty of homes in small downland villages like Heyshott heat with oil, LPG or electricity rather than mains gas, and many owners are now looking at air source heat pumps. A heat pump needs its own protected circuit and a board with the space and capacity to take it. An old fuse box, or a full plastic unit with no spare ways, usually has to go first.

We size the new board with the heating in mind. Going to 10 or 12 ways with full RCBO protection, at £695, gives space for a heat pump circuit, its controls and possibly an EV charger in time. We also check the main fuse and meter tails, and if the supply itself needs uprating we explain how to request it from UK Power Networks.

Heyshott questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Yes, and it is the sensible order. We fit the board with a spare protected way, test the whole installation and send your certificate within 48 hours, so the heating installer has a sound starting point. If they need a particular rating of device for the heat pump circuit, tell us beforehand and we will allow for it.

Rewireable fuses are not illegal, and yours may have worked for decades, but they give no RCD protection against electric shock and they are easy to refit with the wrong wire. Modern boards protect each circuit far more precisely. Prices begin at £425 for a dual RCD board with six ways, or £625 upwards if you would like every circuit on its own RCBO.

Three pictures do the job: the fuse box with its cover open, the meter and main fuse, and a wider view showing where they all sit, sent to us by text. The figure we send back is fixed, and it is the same for Heyshott as for anywhere else in Sussex, with nothing added for the journey.
