Fuse Box Replacement Cost in Sussex

How much does a new fuse box cost? Across Sussex, from £425, and the whole answer is on this page. Every new consumer unit price includes the board, the breakers, a Type 2 surge protector, labour, full testing, the certificate and VAT. No call out fee, no day rates, no mystery number invented at your kitchen table.

Why we publish prices

The price you see is the price you pay

Search for a fuseboard replacement cost and you will find pages that talk around the number for a thousand words and end with "it depends, call us". We think that is why so many old boards in Sussex homes, from coastal terraces to village cottages, never get changed: nobody will say what the job costs until they are standing in your hallway.

So we publish ours, which means your fusebox replacement cost is agreed in writing before we ever book a date. The new consumer unit prices below are the fixed figures we quote every day across Sussex, and after 2,400+ boards we know they hold. Fixed price means exactly that: the number we agree before we book is the number on your invoice, whether the job takes four hours or six.

Send a photo of your board and your postcode and we confirm your exact fuseboard upgrade cost the same day, in writing. If anything about your home moves the price, and the panel further down explains honestly what can, you hear about it before you book, never on the day.

What a new fuse box costs, board by board

Four levels of protection, four honest starting prices. Every one includes the surge protector, the testing, the certificate and VAT.

Dual RCD board

from £425

Two RCDs sharing the circuits between them. Solid, compliant protection at the friendliest price, and the usual choice for one and two bed flats, from Regency and Victorian conversions along the coast to new build apartments. 6 ways from £425, 10 ways from £495.

High integrity dual RCD

from £575

Adds a third bank so smoke alarms and the freezer sit on their own protection, and one fault cannot silence them. 12 ways from £575, well suited to three and four bed homes, from interwar semis along the coast to family houses on the newer estates around Burgess Hill and Horsham.

Full RCBO board

from £625

One protective device per circuit, so a fault trips one way and nothing else. Our recommendation for most Sussex homes. RCBO boards explained.

RCBO + AFDD board

from £1,095

Arc fault detection on every circuit for the highest available fire protection, ideal for period property and HMOs. AFDDs explained.

Honest pricing

What moves the price, and what never does

A fixed price is only worth something if you know how it was built. These are the six things that genuinely decide your fuse box upgrade cost, and the things we promise will never touch it.

  1. Number of ways Every circuit needs its own way on the board and its own protective device. A one bed flat in Worthing might use six ways, a four bed house in Horsham sixteen. More devices and more circuits to test is the single biggest driver of price, which is why our table is organised by ways.
  2. The board technology you choose Dual RCD, high integrity, full RCBO and AFDD boards use progressively more capable protective devices, and the devices are most of the material cost. You pick the level of protection, we tell you the number, and that choice is yours to make calmly, never a pressure sell in your hallway.
  3. Meter tails and earthing below standard A new board can only be certified on a sound foundation. If your meter tails are undersized or the earthing and bonding fall short of current requirements, upgrading them is priced into your written quote before you book. It is a real cost, so we name it up front rather than discover it theatrically on the day.
  4. Access and location A board in a hallway cupboard is quick to reach. A basement flat in a Regency or Victorian conversion with the meter three floors up a shared stair, or a seafront block where the intake sits behind a locked riser, takes longer and is priced at survey. Awkward access changes the quote, never the invoice.
  5. Relocating the board Moving a fuse box out of a bedroom cupboard, off a damp wall or up out of flood reach adds cable and containment work, from £250 on top of any board price. It is an add-on you choose with its own written figure, not a surprise attached to the job.
  6. What never changes it No call out fee, no weekend premium on planned work, no charge for the survey and no extras invented once the old board is off the wall. If it is not in your written quote, you do not pay for it. That rule has held across 2,400+ boards in Sussex homes.
One job, several names

Fuse box, fuseboard or consumer unit: the price is the same

The name tends to follow the age of the house and the person describing it. The job, and the price, do not change with it.

So the table above answers all of them at once. The cost to replace a fuseboard in a two bed flat in Crawley or Hastings starts at the same £425 whether your tenancy agreement calls it a fuse box or your surveyor calls it a consumer unit. And if you are weighing up how much to replace a fuse box against nursing an old one along for another year, remember the £99 EICR: for that money we test every circuit while we are already on site, so you find out exactly what condition the rest of the wiring is in.

The only things that genuinely move the cost to replace a consumer unit are the number of ways and the level of protection you choose, which is why our table is organised by both rather than by property type alone.

  • Fuse boxThe everyday name most of Sussex uses. A new one starts at £425, surge protection included
  • FuseboardTrade and letting agent shorthand for the same unit. New fuseboard cost: the same table, the same figures
  • Consumer unitThe official term in BS 7671 and the wording that appears on your certificate
  • Breaker box, electric panelImported names for the same box on the wall, and the same prices apply

Pricing FAQs

Because we have fitted over 2,400 boards across Sussex, we know almost exactly what a consumer unit change involves before we arrive. A photo of your board and a postcode tells us the ways, the board type and the likely state of the tails and earthing, so we can commit to a price and hold it. A general electrician who changes the occasional board quotes a day rate to cover the unknowns. For us, there are very few unknowns left.

Yes, always. Every figure on this page is the amount you actually pay: board, breakers, surge protection, labour, testing, certificate, Part P notification and VAT, all in. We learned early on that Sussex homeowners compare quotes carefully, and a price that grows by 20 percent at invoice time is not a price, it is bait. Ours do not grow.

We stop, we show you, and we price the remedy separately before touching it. Old wiring in Victorian terraces, Regency conversions and village cottages occasionally hides a genuine defect that only shows itself once the old board is off the wall. When that happens you see the problem with your own eyes, you get a written price for putting it right, and you decide. Nothing is ever added quietly to the invoice, and the price you agreed for the board itself never changes.

We take card, bank transfer or payment on completion, whichever suits you. There is no deposit on domestic work: you pay when the job is finished, tested and powered back up, not before. For landlords and letting agents across Sussex we can invoice the agency directly and email the certificates straight to them.

From £425 across Sussex. That buys a 6 way dual RCD board for a one or two bed flat, with a Type 2 surge protector, full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and VAT all included. A 10 way dual RCD board is from £495 and a full RCBO board from £625. The cost to replace a fuse box is agreed in writing before we book, and it never changes on the day.

The new consumer unit cost depends on the protection level you choose: dual RCD from £425, high integrity dual RCD from £575, full RCBO from £625 and RCBO with AFDDs from £1,095. Bigger boards cost more because every extra way needs its own protective device, so a 14 to 16 way RCBO board runs from £795. Every price includes a Type 2 SPD, testing, certification and Part P notification to Building Control.

For a typical one or two bed flat in Sussex, a 6 way dual RCD board runs from £425 and an 8 way full RCBO board from £625, fixed, with surge protection, testing, certification and VAT included. Basement flats and seafront blocks with awkward meter access are priced at survey, but the figure you agree is still the figure you pay. Send a photo of your board and your exact price comes back the same day.

The same, because they are the same job. Consumer unit upgrade cost and consumer unit replacement cost describe identical work: the old board comes off the wall, a new one goes on, and every circuit is tested and certified. Dual RCD boards run from £425 and full RCBO boards from £625. What we do not offer is a cheap partial swap that reuses old protective devices, because we could not test, certify or guarantee it honestly.

Because quotes are built differently. One quote includes the surge protector, testing, certificate and VAT; another is a bare board price with every extra added later. Ways matter just as much: a 6 way flat board from £425 and a 16 way RCBO board from £795 are genuinely different jobs. So when you compare quotes, compare what is included. Ours include everything, in writing, before you book.

Text or WhatsApp a photo of your current board with your postcode to 0333 360 8691, or use the contact form, and your fixed consumer unit replacement quote comes back in writing the same day. No survey visit is needed for most homes. We answer the phone 8am to 8pm, seven days, and installation slots are usually 3 to 5 working days out.
