Down the peninsula lanes

Older cottages and later houses along quiet lanes

Chidham's homes are spread along the lanes that run down the peninsula, with older cottages and farm buildings standing alongside houses from more recent decades. The boards are as varied as the buildings, from old fuse carriers to plastic units with a single RCD, and some homes have seen very little electrical work since they were first wired.

Quotes come from photos, every circuit is tested before we leave, and fitting most boards is done within 4 to 6 hours. For £575, a high integrity dual RCD board with 12 ways suits a larger house that does not need individual RCBOs on every circuit.

Low carbon upgrades start at the consumer unit

Homes in rural spots like the Chidham peninsula are natural candidates for heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage, especially where oil or bottled gas heating is being replaced. Each system needs its own correctly protected circuit, and heat pump and inverter makers often specify a particular RCD type. An old board with no spare ways can hold the whole project up.

Replacing the board first gives your installer clean, protected ways to connect to, and our Type 2 surge protection guards the new electronics against spikes. If your board is fairly modern and only lacks surge protection, adding it costs £165.

  • RCD types matched to the kit
  • Surge protection included
  • Surge retrofit £165

Coming to Chidham

To reach Chidham, our vans leave Brighton & Hove on the A27, pass Chichester, then follow the A259 west and south onto the peninsula. We do not charge for the journey. Often it does. A heat pump needs its own dedicated circuit, and the manufacturer may require a particular RCD type. If your board is full, lacks RCD protection or is an old fuse box, the heat pump installer may not be able to connect. A few photos are enough for an honest answer on whether a new board is needed.

A dual RCD board splits the circuits between two RCDs, so one fault can switch off around half the house. A full RCBO board gives every circuit its own protection, so only the faulty one goes off. For homes with heat pumps, solar or lots of electronics, RCBOs usually make life easier. Prices start at £425 and £625 respectively.

In most homes it does, though modern consumer units are often a little larger than old fuse boxes, particularly with surge protection and spare ways added. We check the space from your photos. If it will not fit neatly, or the spot is unsuitable, we suggest the nearest sensible position and explain any extra cost before starting.
