Houses set back from the common

Homes reached along tracks and drives

Properties around a common tend to sit back from the road, reached along private tracks or long drives, well spaced and often surrounded by trees. That spacing affects the supply. Cables may run some distance from the network to the house, and the meter and board can be in a porch, an outbuilding or an external cabinet rather than inside.

We check how your supply arrives before quoting, from the cut out and meter tails to the main earth, and make sure the new board suits that arrangement. Where the board lives somewhere cold or damp, we take that into account when choosing the enclosure and its position.

  • Supply route checked before quoting
  • Meter tails and cut out inspected
  • Position suited to cold or damp
  • Main earth confirmed

Why surge protection earns its place here

Overhead lines still carry much of the supply through wooded and open countryside, and branches brought down in storms are a common cause of power cuts. Switching on the network and lightning near the lines can both send short voltage spikes into a house, enough to damage boiler controls, routers and the electronics inside modern appliances.

Type 2 surge protection, fitted in the consumer unit, diverts those spikes to earth before they reach your equipment, and it comes as standard on every board we install. If your existing board is modern and in good order, we can often retrofit a surge device on its own for £165.

  • Type 2 surge device on every board
  • Retrofit for £165 where space allows
  • Shields boilers and electronics
  • Earth path tested so it works
Getting to you

Getting to Chailey Common

We come up the A23 to Haywards Heath and east along the A272, or out through Lewes and up the A275 when that road is clearer. A fixed quote only needs photos of your board. If the network has restored power after a storm but your house is still dark, phone us, as we can often get to you the same day.

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Unplug everything on the affected circuit and try the breaker or RCD again. If it trips straight away, leave it off and call us. Water in an outdoor fitting, storm damage to a cable or an appliance hit by a surge can all cause it. We find the fault, make it safe and quote if the board needs replacing.

Often, yes, if your consumer unit is a modern type with space for a compatible device. The retrofit costs £165 and the circuit is tested afterwards. If the board is old, plastic or full, replacing it makes more sense, and surge protection then comes included at no extra charge.

No. Everything up to and including the cut out belongs to UK Power Networks, and the meter belongs to your energy supplier. We work from the meter tails onwards. If we see damage to the incoming supply, or an overhead line rubbing against branches, we tell you, and you can report it to UK Power Networks by calling 105.
