Plenty of owners assume an old fuse box means a full rewire. Often it does not. If the cables test well, a new consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection brings the installation up to a safe modern standard with a fraction of the disruption. A rewire is only needed when the wiring itself is worn out, damaged or unsafe.

Call 0333 360 8691Rubber insulated cable was widely used until around the 1960s. Signs include black or dark cable that looks cracked or crumbly where it enters the fuse box or a light fitting, and old round pin sockets. Please do not handle it to find out. A photo is the safer route, and from it we can tell you what we think we are looking at.
If a circuit is dangerous we will not connect it to the new board, because doing so would make it look protected when it is not safe. We explain the test result, label the circuit as disconnected and quote the repair, so you can decide whether to go ahead with it.
If you would rather know the condition first, yes. On its own, an EICR reports on every circuit and costs between £175 and £350, according to the property. If you already know the board is going, it is better value to book the EICR with the board change, when it costs £99.
