Cottages, farmhouses and larger homes in Withyham

Withyham is not a village of estates or terraces. Its homes are spread out: cottages near the church, farmhouses along the lanes, and some larger houses set in their own grounds. That spread shows up in the fuse boxes we expect to find, from a single small board in a cottage to several boards in a big house, each added as extensions, garages and outbuildings were wired over the years.

The £425 dual RCD option is often all a cottage needs. In a larger house we look at the whole arrangement first: where the supply enters, how many boards hang off it, and whether each one is properly protected. A photo of each board and the meter lets us price everything in one go.

  • Every board in the house assessed
  • Sub-mains checked and labelled
  • Old fuses swapped for RCBOs
  • One fixed price for the lot

When the house has a main board and several sub-boards

Bigger country houses often have a main board near the meter feeding smaller boards in a garage, a stable block, a workshop or a separate wing. Over the decades these get added by different people, and it is common to find a sub-main protected by an old fuse, or an outlying board with no RCD at all. Changing only the front board leaves those weak points in place.

We trace each sub-main, check the cable size and protection, and test at the far end before deciding what each board needs. Sometimes the outlying board is fine and simply needs a properly protected feed from the new main unit. Where it does need changing, it goes on the quote from the start.

  • Sub-mains traced from the meter
  • Correct protection on each feed
  • Far end of every cable tested
  • Outlying boards priced up front

Not always. We look at each one, and the cables between them, before deciding. A board in good order with proper RCD protection may stay, while one with rewireable fuses or no RCD should be replaced. Your quote lists every board separately, so you can see exactly what we recommend and why, and nothing is changed without your agreement.

Yes, and it usually makes sense to do it then. While the main board is off we can give the outbuilding its own protected way, test the cable all the way out, and replace a small board at the far end if it needs it. Doing it in one visit means the power only goes off once.

The Electrical Installation Certificate records the new board and the test results for every circuit it supplies, including any sub-mains feeding other boards. It lands in your inbox within 48 hours, and Building Control is told about the work under Part P. Keep the paperwork with your deeds, as a buyer's solicitor will ask for it when you sell.
