A market town of old buildings and village cottages

Midhurst is an old market town, and the streets around the Market Square, North Street and Knockhundred Row contain a striking number of historic buildings, some timber framed, many with later stone or brick fronts. Around it, Easebourne, Cocking, Stedham and the scattered villages of the Rother valley have cottages, farmhouses, converted barns and some twentieth century housing.

Older buildings mean thick walls, low ceilings and boards tucked in odd places, while the wiring may have been extended many times. In the villages we often meet old fuse boards on overhead supplies, outbuildings fed from the house, and earth rods that have not been tested in years.

  • Timber framed homes handled carefully
  • Converted barns and outbuildings
  • Supplies to garages and workshops
  • Mixed era wiring tested
  • RCBO protection recommended

Rural lets and cottages

Cottage lets, estate properties and village rentals

Rented housing around Midhurst tends to be cottages and village homes rather than flats, including properties let by rural estates and holiday cottages for visitors to the National Park, Cowdray and the Downs. Rural lets have their own electrical quirks, such as outbuildings on the same supply and TT earthing, and the EICR needs to cover all of it.

We replace boards and add an EICR for £99 on the same visit, which is far more practical than two trips into the countryside. Standalone EICRs run from £175 to £350 depending on size and outbuildings.

  • Estate cottage portfolios
  • Holiday cottages between guests
  • Outbuildings included in testing
  • EICR £99 with a new board
  • Earth rod readings recorded
  • Fixed price, no travel extra

Overhead lines and earth rods

TT earthing in the countryside

Many rural homes around Midhurst are fed by overhead lines from UK Power Networks, and a good number rely on TT earthing, meaning the house has its own earth electrode in the ground rather than an earth provided with the supply. That electrode has to have a low enough resistance, and every circuit needs RCD protection, for the installation to be safe. Older boards on TT supplies sometimes have neither properly in place.

With every board change we measure the earth electrode resistance, check the condition of the rod and its connection, and make sure the new board gives full RCD cover. Surge protection is especially worthwhile on exposed overhead supplies, and it is included as standard.

  • Earth electrode resistance tested
  • Rod and clamp condition checked
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Surge protection for overhead lines
  • Outbuilding earthing reviewed
  • Results recorded on your certificate
Getting to you

Fuse box failures around Midhurst

Midhurst is one of the further parts of our patch from Brighton & Hove, but we cover it fully and aim to reach you the same day where possible. Storms on overhead lines, failed RCDs and burning smells from old fuse boards are the calls we most often take from rural homes. If the board looks damaged and it is safe to reach, turn off the main switch.

If the whole area is off, check with UK Power Networks on 105 first, as it may be a supply fault rather than your board.

Yes. TT earthing is common in the villages around Midhurst. We test the earth rod's resistance and condition as part of the job. If it is within acceptable limits the new board goes straight in with RCD protection on every circuit; if it is not, we explain the options for improving it before going further.

No. Replacing a consumer unit indoors is not a planning matter, even within the National Park. It is notifiable under Part P Building Regulations, which we handle for you through Chichester District Council's Building Control. If your house is listed, a like for like replacement generally does not need consent either.

Yes. Outbuilding supplies are part of the installation, so we test them along with the house. Detached buildings on a TT supply, or ones fed by old cable, sometimes need extra attention, and we will point that out with a price before any additional work.

A new board will not stop supply cuts on overhead lines, which are for UK Power Networks to repair. It does include Type 2 surge protection, which helps protect your electronics from transient surges on the supply, and modern RCBOs mean a fault on one circuit will not take out the whole house.

No. The price is fixed by the board and work involved. We plan from your photos, carry everything we need and aim to finish, test and certify in a single visit, so distance does not add to your bill.
