Wiring that has grown with the house
In a long established village, houses are rarely wired just once. A cottage might have older cable in one part, newer cable in an extension, and junctions hidden under floors from alterations long forgotten. The fuse box at the end of it all may protect the cables from overload, but it does nothing to notice a loose connection slowly heating up.
Before the new board goes in we test insulation, continuity and earthing on every circuit, so you know what state the wiring is in. Where we find faults we show you the readings and explain them. The new consumer unit is then fitted, labelled and certified, with Building Control notified.
- Every circuit tested before changeover
- Readings explained in plain English
- Hidden faults reported, not ignored
- Certified and notified under Part P

Arc fault detection for older wiring
An arc fault detection device, or AFDD, watches a circuit for the small electrical arcs that come from damaged cable, loose terminals or a nail through a wire. Ordinary breakers and RCDs are not designed to notice these, yet arcing can char insulation and start a fire inside a wall. In an older home that has been altered many times, that extra layer can bring real peace of mind.
Combined RCBO and AFDD boards are priced from £1,095 with 10 ways, or from £1,295 with 14. Nobody has to have them: a full RCBO board, starting at £625, remains a very good standard. We explain the difference with your own house in mind and leave the choice with you.
- 10 way AFDD board from £1,095
- 14 way AFDD board from £1,295
- No pressure to choose the top option
- Surge protection on every board

Asked in Wartling
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691An RCBO combines overload protection with RCD protection against electric shock for a single circuit. An AFDD adds detection of arcing, the sparking that comes from damaged or loose connections. On our AFDD boards the protected circuits have both. The RCBO looks after people and cables, and the AFDD adds a fire safeguard on top.
It will trip if there is a genuine arcing fault, which is the point. Before fitting, we test each circuit and report anything showing a problem first. Many units also indicate why they tripped, which helps track down the cause. Nuisance tripping is uncommon on wiring in good condition, and we explain what to do if it happens.
Yes. Every board change includes testing the whole installation, and you can add a full EICR for £99. That report covers the condition of the wiring, sockets, lighting and earthing throughout, with any issues graded by urgency. It is a sensible step in an older home and useful paperwork if you ever sell.
