Testing first, so the new board starts clean

With only a handful of homes, there is no standard Popple Hill house, so we make no assumptions. A new consumer unit is only as sound as the wiring connected to it, and in rural houses that wiring can include sections from several decades. Testing each circuit before and after the change is how we find out what is really behind the walls.

Most circuits pass without fuss. Where one does not, we tell you what we found, show you the readings and explain whether it needs a repair, a section of new cable or just a closer look, before anything extra is done or charged.

  • Every circuit tested before connection
  • Readings shown to you on the day
  • No extra work without agreement
  • Results on the certificate

Rubber, lead and lighting without an earth

Some country homes still contain wiring from the middle of the last century: rubber insulated cable that crumbles with age, lead sheathed runs, or lighting circuits installed without an earth conductor. You often cannot see them, and they can sit unnoticed behind an old fuse box for years, since rewireable fuses take no notice of insulation slowly breaking down.

A modern board with RCD protection will expose that kind of fault quickly, which is a good thing but can surprise people with sudden trips. That is why we test first. If a rewire or partial rewire is needed, we explain it plainly so you can decide what to do next.

  • Rubber and lead sheathed cable spotted
  • Earthless lighting circuits flagged
  • Insulation tested before switch-on
  • Clear advice on what comes next

Rewireable fuses only react to overloads and short circuits. They ignore small leakage currents to earth, which is exactly what deteriorating insulation produces. An RCD detects that leakage and switches off. So a new board can reveal faults that were present all along, and that is why we test every circuit before switching it on.

Look at any cable you can see near the fuse box or in the loft. Black, cloth covered or crumbling cable, often with a thick sheath, suggests rubber insulation, while modern cable is smooth grey or white PVC. Do not handle anything that looks damaged. If you send a photo, we can tell you what it appears to be.

We will not connect a circuit to a new board if it is unsafe. Often the board can still go in, with the faulty circuit left disconnected and clearly marked until it is repaired. We talk you through the options on the day, and nothing beyond the quoted price is done without your agreement.
