Small settlement, older boards

No street of matching houses here

In a settlement this small there is no typical house, only a few households, each with its own history of extensions, outbuildings and repairs. In rural homes the fuse box is often the oldest part of the electrical system, because a board that still switches on rarely gets attention until it trips, scorches or fails an inspection.

Where a cottage has only a modest number of circuits, a dual RCD layout at £425 or more usually does the job. Giving every circuit its own RCBO costs from £625 and means one fault cannot take out the kitchen and the heating together. Prices are fixed before we start.

  • Scorch marks investigated

Your own earth, under your own garden

Overhead lines feed many of the rural homes in Colgate parish, and plenty of those supplies are TT, meaning the network provides no earth and the house depends on a rod of its own set into the ground. On a TT supply, RCD protection does essential work, and an old board without it leaves very little between a fault and the person who touches it.

Part of every board change is testing the earth electrode, checking the main earthing and bonding, and recording what we find on your certificate. If the rod is missing, damaged or reading too high, we tell you straight away and explain what it needs before the new board is switched on. We confirm your supply type on the day.

Look near the meter and the main fuse. A green and yellow earth cable leaving the house to a rod in the ground, sometimes under a small cover, usually means TT. If the earth clamps onto the supply cable or the main fuse housing instead, the network is probably providing it. If in doubt, a photo will let us confirm it for you.

No. Our prices are the same anywhere in Sussex, whether you live in central Brighton or down a lane in Colgate parish. Dual RCD boards begin at £425 and full RCBO boards at £625, and whatever fixed figure we quote from your photos is what you pay for that work.

Every board change already includes testing the whole property. An EICR goes further and gives you a formal condition report, which is useful for selling, insuring or simply knowing where you stand. It costs £99 when booked with any board change, compared with £175 to £350 on its own.
