Roadside houses on the edge of Arundel

Crossbush is a small settlement rather than a town street, with homes set along the roads near the junction and looking back towards Arundel. As around most of the town, the housing is a mix of ages. Boards in homes like these range from original fuse carriers to plastic consumer units from the 1990s and 2000s, which the wiring regulations no longer allow in new domestic work.

A plastic board fitted before 2016 is not automatically dangerous, but it deserves a look, especially if some circuits have no RCD protection. In its place goes a metal enclosure carrying Type 2 surge protection, then the whole property is tested before we hand you the certificate.

  • Metal enclosures as standard
  • RCD protection for all circuits
  • Surge protection fitted
  • Certificate within 48 hours

Ready for a home car charger

Living beside the A27, households here are likely to depend on a car, and more of them are switching to electric. A home charger is a large, steady load, often 32 amps for hours at a time, and an older board with no spare ways or a borderline main supply can make fitting one awkward or impossible without further changes.

When we fit your new consumer unit we can leave a spare way for a future charger and record the main fuse size and supply arrangement on your paperwork. That gives whoever installs the charger a clear starting point and avoids a second board change later.

  • Spare way kept for a charger
  • Main fuse size recorded
  • Supply details on paper
  • No second board change later

A new consumer unit can have a spare way kept free for a dedicated charger circuit, and we check the main fuse rating and earthing arrangement while we are there. Whether the supply has enough capacity depends on your other loads, so we record what we find and flag anything UK Power Networks may need to look at first.

No rule forces an owner to replace a plastic board fitted before 2016, because the non combustible requirement applies to new work. Older plastic units often lack full RCD and surge protection, though, and any sign of heat damage, scorching or unexplained tripping means it should go. If you are unsure, a standalone EICR from £175 will show where it stands.

Your Electrical Installation Certificate, setting out test results for every circuit, reaches you by email in under 48 hours. We also notify Building Control of the work through our Part P registration, after which a Building Regulations compliance certificate arrives separately. Keep both somewhere safe, because buyers, insurers and letting agents may ask to see them.
