Where the A259 crosses Cuckmere

Fuse Box Replacement in Exceat

Exceat is barely more than a few buildings where the A259 meets the Cuckmere, east of Seaford and a little inland from where the river reaches the sea. Homes here can swap an old fuse box for a steel consumer unit at a set price, fitted by our own team of Part P registered installers.

A very small settlement

A few homes in an open landscape

Exceat is best known as the gateway to the Seven Sisters Country Park, and most of the buildings by the river crossing serve walkers and visitors. Only a small number of private homes sit around it. If you live in one, the electrics probably have more in common with an isolated rural property than a house in Seaford, and we plan the job accordingly.

That means confirming how the property is earthed, checking any supply to outbuildings, and making sure the new board suits the way you heat the home. Prices begin at £425 for dual RCD protection and £625 for full RCBO, and either one includes surge protection and complete testing.

  • Few homes, open landscape
  • Earthing confirmed on survey
  • Heating loads considered
  • Surge protection included

Steel boards and sea air

Exceat lies low in the valley, open to the wind off the sea at Cuckmere Haven, and salty air finds its way into meter boxes, garages and porches. Over time it corrodes terminals, screws and old metal enclosures, and a board that looks fine from the front can show rust and discoloured connections once the cover comes off.

New boards come in steel enclosures, as the wiring regulations require for homes, so it really pays to give the new one a dry, sheltered spot indoors rather than a damp porch or garage. We renew the meter tails and check the main earth connections at the same time, replacing any clamps that show corrosion.

  • Steel enclosure, sheltered spot
  • Meter tails renewed
  • Earth clamps checked for rust
  • Damp positions avoided
Getting to you

Exceat, straight off the A259

From Brighton & Hove we follow the A259 through Newhaven and Seaford, then down the hill to the Cuckmere crossing, so Exceat is simple to reach and there is no extra charge for the trip. Bookings are taken by phone seven days a week. If a failed board has cut off your power, we do our best to be there that same day.

Exceat questions

Still not sure?

Partly. The meter belongs to your supplier and the main fuse to UK Power Networks, so they deal with those. The cabinet and the cables from the meter to your consumer unit are yours, and we can renew the tails and advise on the cabinet when we replace the board. If it is beyond saving, we will explain the options.

Since an amendment to the wiring regulations in 2016, consumer units in homes have had to be housed in non-combustible enclosures, so that if a connection overheats the fire stays inside the box. In practice that means a steel unit. Older plastic boards are not automatically unsafe, but every board we fit now meets the newer rule.

The whole installation. Before the old board comes out we check what is there, and afterwards every circuit is tested for insulation, continuity, polarity and earth fault loop impedance, and every RCD is trip tested. The results go on your Electrical Installation Certificate, which we email within 48 hours, and Building Control is notified.
