Choosing the right board for a Cowbeech home

Cowbeech is a rural village with homes from several periods and farmland all around. For most houses a board change is straightforward, but the choice of board still matters. A dual RCD unit splits your circuits between two protective devices; a full RCBO board gives each circuit its own, so a single fault never knocks out everything at once.

Smaller homes can choose between six ways of dual RCD protection from £425 and an 8 way full RCBO board, which starts at £625. We recommend a board based on your circuits and how you use them, and the quote states exactly what you are getting.

Arc fault detection explained

Is an AFDD board worth it for your house?

Arc fault detection devices watch for the tiny sparking that happens when a cable is damaged, a connection works loose or a flex is crushed behind furniture. An ordinary breaker or RCD will not see it. The current wiring regulations recommend AFDDs more widely than before, and they make most sense where a fire could take hold quickly, such as timber-framed or older homes.

A 10 way RCBO and AFDD board starts at £1,095, and a 14 way one at £1,295. They are not essential for every home, and we will say so honestly, but for a timber-framed cottage or a house with wiring of uncertain age they add a worthwhile layer of protection.

An RCD protects a group of circuits against earth leakage, so when it trips, everything on that side of the board goes off. An RCBO combines that protection with an overload breaker for a single circuit. With RCBOs, a fault on the kitchen sockets leaves the lights, fridge and heating running while you find the cause.

It depends on the board. Many consumer units cannot take them at all, or only accept one manufacturer's devices, which is why it is often simpler to choose an AFDD board at the time of replacement. Not sure about yours? A picture of the current unit lets us explain what is possible before you make up your mind.

They are designed to tell the difference between harmful arcing and the harmless sparks from a light switch or a motor, so most homes notice no difference day to day. Occasionally an old appliance with a worn motor or a damaged flex will trigger one, and in that case the device is doing exactly what it is meant to do.
