Scattered rural homes

A handful of houses among the fields

As a hamlet, Brooks Green is a loose scatter of houses, cottages and farm properties rather than a village with a centre. Homes like these have usually been altered piece by piece over decades, so it is common to open a cupboard and find an old fuse box beside a newer isolator, a separate box for an outbuilding and wiring of several different ages.

Before fitting anything we look at what feeds each circuit, where the cables run and how the house is earthed. If a circuit shows poor insulation or a missing earth, we tell you plainly and price the fix before work starts, so the new board goes onto wiring that can take it.

Overhead lines and earth rods

Out among the fields east of Billingshurst, many properties are fed by overhead lines from UK Power Networks rather than buried cables. Where the network provides no earth terminal, the house depends on its own earth rod in the ground, an arrangement known as TT. With TT earthing, the RCDs in the consumer unit do much of the work of keeping you safe in a fault.

We measure the rod's resistance as part of every board change and check its clamp and cable. If the reading is poor or the rod has corroded, we can drive a new one. Every circuit on the new board then gets RCD protection, and Type 2 surge protection comes as standard.

  • Overhead supplies common
  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Replacement rods available
  • RCD on every circuit

It changes how the board has to protect you. With TT earthing the rod by itself cannot cut the power quickly enough in a fault, so RCDs carry that duty. From £625, a full RCBO board gives every circuit its own RCD, which suits TT homes well, and the rod is measured both before and after the change.

It helps. Fitted as standard on all our boards, a Type 2 surge protector limits voltage spikes arriving along the supply, such as those induced by a nearby lightning strike or switching on the network. It cannot stop a direct strike on the house, but it gives televisions, routers and boiler controls a much better chance.

No. Our fixed prices are the same in every part of Sussex, with no travel charge. Boards start at £425 with dual RCDs and £625 with full RCBO protection, and the price quoted from your photos is what you pay unless we find a hidden fault and you agree to have it fixed.
