Older village houses with solid walls

Many of Houghton's older houses and cottages have thick solid walls, and some sit right beside the road. Solid walls like these make it hard to run new cables without leaving a mark, so a consumer unit change in an old cottage is as much about care and planning as it is about the board itself.

We aim to fit the new unit where the old fuse box was, reuse the existing cable routes and avoid chasing into old plaster. If your home is listed, a like for like swap inside the house does not normally need consent, but we flag anything visible that you may want to check first.

  • New board in the old position
  • No chasing into old walls
  • Listed home concerns flagged
  • Dust sheets and a tidy finish

Letting a cottage to walkers and visitors

The South Downs Way crosses the River Arun close to Houghton, and the valley draws walkers, cyclists and visitors through the year. If you let a cottage, an annexe or rooms here, a reliable and certified installation matters: guests should never be left in the dark by a tripping board, and insurers and booking platforms may ask to see the paperwork.

We can fit your new consumer unit between bookings and carry out an EICR at the same visit for £99, rather than £175 or more on its own. RCBO boards suit lets well, since a guest's faulty hairdryer trips one circuit instead of plunging the whole cottage into darkness.

  • Work fitted between bookings
  • EICR £99 alongside a new board
  • Paperwork for insurers
  • Fewer whole house trips with RCBOs

Houghton questions

Asked in Houghton

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

It should not. We fit the new board in the same spot wherever practical, use the existing cable entries and leave the area clean. Modern units are compact, and if the old fuse box sat in a cupboard the new one usually goes back into the same cupboard with nothing else to see.

The new board comes with an Electrical Installation Certificate, which we email over within 48 hours, and our Part P registration lets us notify Building Control for you. Add an EICR for £99 at the same visit and you also get a full condition report on the rest of the installation, which is often what insurers ask for.

Current wiring regulations call for surge protection in most installations, and we include a Type 2 device on every board at no extra cost. It limits the voltage spikes from lightning and network switching that can quietly damage broadband routers, televisions, boiler controls and other sensitive electronics around the home.
