What a Chapel Cross fuse box is usually up against

In a hamlet like Chapel Cross you tend to find a handful of houses and cottages of different ages rather than any single type. Some will have been rewired in stages over the decades, which can leave a fuse box with mixed protection: old rewireable fuses on one side and a later RCD added beside it. That patchwork is the thing we are most often asked to tidy up in rural homes.

A replacement board brings every circuit under one modern unit with RCD protection throughout. Most cottages manage well with dual RCDs, from £425, but if you want a single fault to cut only one circuit, full RCBO protection from £625 is the better buy. Either way the whole house is tested before we leave.

  • Piecemeal boards brought together
  • Dual RCD from £425
  • Full RCBO from £625
  • Whole house tested on the day

Why earthing gets extra attention out here

Overhead lines feed a good share of the rural homes around Heathfield, and many of them run as TT systems, taking their earth from a rod set into the ground instead of the network cable. If that rod has corroded, been disturbed or was never very effective, the protection in your fuse box has far less to work with.

That is why every Chapel Cross job includes a reading of the earth electrode's resistance, a check of the main earthing conductor and bonding, and RCD protection extended to every circuit. If the rod needs replacing or improving we tell you before we start, rather than finding out halfway through the day.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • Main earth and bonding checked
  • RCD cover on every circuit
  • Rod problems flagged first

Look near the meter for a green and yellow earth cable. If it leads outside or down through the floor, rather than connecting into the supplier's equipment beside the meter, the house is probably on its own rod. The rod itself is often under a small inspection cover outdoors. Photos of the meter, cut out and board let us tell you for certain.

It will keep working, but without an RCD there is nothing to cut the power quickly if someone touches a live part or a cable is damaged. On a rod earthed supply that gap matters more, because the earth path can be weaker than on a network earth. Replacing the board closes it, from £425 with dual RCDs.

Usually not. Clear photos of the fuse box with its door open, the meter, and anything connected nearby give us enough for a fixed price in most cases. If something in the pictures needs a closer look, such as an outbuilding feed or an unusual earth arrangement, we will say so and arrange a visit.
