Colgate's houses and how they are wired

Colgate is a loosely spread village, with homes set along roads through the woodland rather than packed around a single centre. Properties range from older cottages to twentieth century houses and bungalows, many of them extended over the years. Their fuse boxes vary as much as the buildings, and in some homes the original board is still doing the job.

Smaller cottages are usually well served by dual RCD protection from £425, whereas bigger, extended houses tend to need extra ways: either a dual RCD unit with 10 ways for £495, or full RCBO from £625. Surge protection comes as standard, which is welcome where supplies run through trees.

Getting the board heat pump ready

Homes in and around Colgate that are not on mains gas usually heat with oil, LPG or electricity, and more owners are now looking at air source heat pumps. Fitting one means adding a substantial new circuit, sometimes with a fresh hot water cylinder and its own immersion as well, which is more than an elderly fuse box lacking spare ways and RCD protection can take on.

Changing the board first, or as part of the heating project, gives your installer a properly protected way for the heat pump and room for the cylinder. We leave spare ways where we can and test the earthing, which the heat pump installer will want to see recorded.

  • Spare ways for heat pump circuits
  • Immersion and cylinder circuits sorted
  • Earthing tested and recorded
  • Paperwork ready for your heating installer

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

If your board is old or full, yes, or at least at the same time. Heating installers generally need a spare protected way and a sound earth before they can connect. Doing the board first gives the heat pump fitter a clear starting point, and you have a certificate showing the installation was tested.

Not much. The boiler has its own circuit, usually through a fused switch near the boiler, and it goes onto the new board like any other. We test it, label it and check the boiler restarts properly before we leave. If you plan to move away from oil later, tell us so we can leave room.

Not necessarily. If it already has RCD protection, a metal enclosure and spare ways, it may be fine, and adding surge protection for £165 could be all you need. Open the board's front door, take a clear photo and send it over, and you will get an honest view on whether to replace it or leave it alone.
