A village with its own parish

Village houses beneath the downs

This small village gives its name to its own parish and sits among the chalk hills of the South Downs, inside the National Park. Its older homes are typical of the area, built with flint and brick, with later houses in between. Many cottages have been modernised inside more than once, and the fuse box is often the part left until last.

That usually means an older board doing a modern job, with more appliances, perhaps an electric shower or a bigger oven added since it was fitted. We check each circuit's cable size against what it now supplies, then fit a board where every way is correctly rated and RCD protected, with surge protection included.

  • Older homes, later additions
  • Circuit ratings checked against loads
  • RCD protection on every way
  • Surge protection included

Why chalk ground matters for an earth rod

Rural homes fed by overhead lines often rely on their own earth rod rather than an earth from the network. How well a rod performs depends on the ground around it. Thin soil over chalk and flint can make rods hard to drive deep, and free draining ground dries out in summer, so a rod that tested well when installed can read much higher years later.

Each board change includes a resistance test on the earth electrode and an inspection of the rod, its clamp and the earthing conductor back to the board. If the reading is high or unstable, we explain the options, such as a deeper or additional rod, and price them separately. On this kind of supply the RCDs do the protective work, so it matters.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Clamp and conductor inspected
  • Extra rods quoted if needed
  • RCDs matched to TT earthing
Getting to you

On to East Dean, past Singleton and Charlton

The drive from Brighton is longer than the map suggests: the A27 to Chichester, north on the A286 to Singleton, then east through Charlton. We do not charge for those extra miles. For a booking, text us pictures of the board and the earth rod; if the power has failed, ring instead, as we aim to be with you that day.

It is usually close to where the supply enters, often outside near the meter, sometimes under a small inspection cover. Keep it visible and undamaged, and avoid burying it under paving or a new patio. If the green and yellow cable to it is ever cut or loose, call us, because exposed metalwork in the house would no longer be earthed.

Yes. Both work on this kind of earthing, and for an outdoor car charger it can even be the simpler arrangement. What matters is a reliable earth rod reading and suitable RCD protection, which we establish when we change the board. We also leave spare ways, so the specialist installer can connect straight in later.

A modern consumer unit, with a main switch, a Type 2 surge device, and RCDs or individual RCBOs guarding every circuit. Where a home has its own earth rod we often suggest full RCBOs, so one fault does not cut the whole house. An 8 way RCBO board starts at £625 and a dual RCD board at £425.
