Sayers Common houses and what powers them

Houses of quite different ages sit side by side along the road through Sayers Common and the lanes off it. An older property may still have an early fuse box behind a cupboard door, while its neighbour has a reasonably modern board that only needs attention because the owners now want to add something substantial, such as an electric shower or a garden room.

The choice in most homes here lies between a dual RCD board, priced from £425, and, where a single RCD trip currently blacks out half the house, a full RCBO board, priced from £625. An annexe or a detached garage can push a larger home up to 14 to 16 ways, and that size costs £795.

  • Old fuse carriers retired
  • Single RCD boards replaced
  • Annexe and garage circuits included
  • Surge protection fitted as standard

The cut-out, the meter and your tails

In older houses the equipment upstream of the fuse box can be as old as the box itself. The sealed cut-out holding the main fuse belongs to UK Power Networks, the meter to your energy supplier, and everything from the meter tails onwards to you. When we change a board we look at all three, because a weak link anywhere affects the new installation.

If there is no isolator switch between the meter and the board, we will recommend one, so future work never means pulling the main fuse. A cut-out that is cracked, scorched or obviously old is reported to UK Power Networks to deal with, since it is their equipment and nobody else should open it.

  • Cut-out condition reported
  • Meter tails sized and checked
  • Isolator recommended if missing
  • Network issues passed to UKPN

Yes. Hickstead, just to the north, and the scattered farms and houses around Sayers Common are all included, with no travel charge anywhere in Sussex. Whether you live on the main road through the village or at the end of a long lane, the quote from your photos is fixed and does not rise because of distance.

Older cut-outs are often black, sometimes with a cast iron or pitch-filled body, and some early types contain asbestos. Do not open or poke at it. Send us a photo with your board pictures and we will say whether it looks like it needs attention. If it does, UK Power Networks replaces its own equipment.

No. The consumer unit is on your side of the meter, so the supplier is not involved unless the meter itself has to move. If the network needs to remove the main fuse to make the work safe, or the tails need upgrading, we explain what is involved and arrange the timing with you in advance.
