Old cottages, older cables

Testing what lies behind an old fuse box

Older rural cottages can still contain lengths of rubber insulated or lead sheathed cable from much earlier wiring, even where most circuits have since been renewed. Rubber insulation becomes brittle with age and can crumble when disturbed. These cables are often hidden under floors or in lofts, and the fuse box itself gives no clue that they are there.

Before connecting anything to a new board, we test the insulation of every circuit. If old cable turns up, we tell you what we found, roughly where it runs, how urgent it is and what replacing it would involve. The board change itself stays at its fixed price.

  • Insulation tested on every circuit
  • Old cable types identified
  • Findings explained honestly
  • Board price stays fixed

Moving a fuse box out of a cramped cupboard

In cottages the fuse box often ended up wherever the supply came in: under the stairs behind the vacuum cleaner, high above a front door, or in a damp lean-to. That can make resetting a breaker in the dark awkward, and some positions are no longer suitable at all. A board change is the ideal time to move it somewhere better.

Moving the board at the same time as replacing it adds £250. If you only want an existing modern board moved, that is £395 on its own. The meter and the sealed main fuse stay where they are, because moving those is a job for your supplier or UK Power Networks.

Usually, yes. When we fit a new board we can relocate it for an extra £250, extending the circuits to the new position neatly and safely. Choose somewhere dry, easy to reach and away from water. Send a photo of where it is now and where you would like it, and we will confirm whether the move is practical.

Very likely. We test every circuit before connecting it, and older cable that passes its insulation test can be connected to the new board while you plan any rewiring. If a circuit fails, we leave it isolated rather than connect it, and explain exactly why, so you know what needs attention first.

Within 48 hours of finishing, we email your Electrical Installation Certificate, which sets out test results for every circuit. The Building Control notification is made under Part P, and the compliance certificate follows separately. Keep both somewhere safe, because insurers, buyers and letting agents may ask to see them in future.
