Big houses, big boards
Crowborough grew in the late Victorian and Edwardian period as a healthy hilltop retreat, and many large detached houses from that era still stand in the leafier roads towards the Beacon and the forest. Later decades added more detached and semi-detached homes, while estates around Jarvis Brook and the south of the town brought more modest family houses and bungalows, many of them now extended.
In a large house it is common to find several boards: an original one, another added for a kitchen extension and a third in a garage or annexe. Bringing these together, or replacing them with properly coordinated units, makes the installation safer and easier to manage. A 14 to 16 way RCBO board at £795 suits many of these homes.
- Large detached houses
- Several boards rationalised
- Kitchen extension circuits
- Garages and annexes
- 14 to 16 way RCBO boards
- Whole property certificate

Family lets and annexes
Crowborough's rental market leans towards family houses rather than shared housing, with tenants drawn by the schools, the forest and the commute to Tunbridge Wells by road and to London by train from the station at Jarvis Brook. Some owners let out annexes or converted outbuildings separately, which raises its own questions about how those spaces are supplied, metered and protected.
If you let a whole house or an annexe, the private rented sector rules require an EICR at least every five years. Standalone reports cost £175 to £350, or £99 alongside a board change. Where an annexe is fed from the main house, we test the sub-main and its protection as part of the inspection.
- Family house lets
- Annexes let separately
- Sub-mains tested
- EICR from £175
- £99 EICR with a new board
- Clear reports for agents

Power beyond the main house
Garden offices, garages and workshops are a regular feature of Crowborough's larger plots. Each is usually supplied by a sub-main cable from the house, and those cables were not always sized or protected correctly when they went in. Some run underground with no record of the route, and a few still feed small boards with rewirable fuses at the far end.
When we replace the main consumer unit, the outgoing way to each outbuilding is fitted with suitable protection, and the sub-main is tested along with the board it feeds. If an outbuilding should have its own earthing arrangement, we explain why and what that involves before any work goes ahead.
- Garden office supplies
- Garage and workshop boards
- Sub-main cables tested
- Correct protection at the house
- Remote boards replaced too
- Outbuilding earthing reviewed
Same day cover in Crowborough
Crowborough is at the northern edge of our area, reached from Brighton through Uckfield on the A26. If your power is out, a board is overheating or there is a burning smell near the fuse box, call us between 8am and 8pm, any day. We will aim to get an installer to you the same day where possible, and in the meantime we can talk you through switching off safely.
Bigger houses take longer, so for a large board change we may plan a full day rather than the usual 4 to 6 hours. We tell you at the quote stage, so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.

Fuse box questions from Crowborough
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre. No pressure, no hard sell.
Call 0333 360 8691Yes. We price each board on its own, or work out whether some can be combined into one larger unit. Often the main house board is replaced with an RCBO unit, and smaller boards in a garage or annexe are replaced or brought back to the house where that makes sense. A photo of each board, with a note of where it is, lets us give a fixed price.
Not a problem, but it often means a TT earthing system, where the property relies on its own earth electrode. RCD protection is essential on TT systems, and we test the electrode resistance as part of the job. If the reading is poor, we tell you before connecting the new board and explain how it can be improved.
For many homes, yes. Our 14 to 16 way RCBO board is £795 and covers most detached houses with an extension or two. Very large properties, or those with several separate outbuilding feeds, may need more ways or a second board. We count the circuits from your photos and our testing, and tell you plainly if one board will not do.
Yes, both are in our area, as are Boarshead, Town Row and the other villages around Crowborough. Older village cottages can have rewirable fuse boxes and mixed wiring, so the full test that comes with every board change is especially useful there. Prices are the same as in town, with no extra charge for travel.
Not while the main board is being swapped, as the supply to the whole property is off for part of the day. What we can do is tell you in advance when that will be, so you can plan calls and work around it. The garden office circuit is reconnected and tested as soon as the new board is in.
