Where a home has its own earth rod rather than an earth provided by the network, the soil matters. Free draining ground dries quickly, and dry ground resists the flow of current to earth more than damp clay does, so a rod that tested well one winter can read much higher in a dry summer.
Because the RCDs carry the job of cutting off a fault on a TT supply, every visit includes a reading of the earth electrode's resistance and a timed trip test on each RCD. If the reading is poor we explain the options, such as an additional or deeper rod, before anything is changed.

Not at all. Plenty of homes have had circuit breakers swapped into an old fuse board, or a separate unit added for one new circuit.
