Riverside Lewes, below Cliffe Hill

Fuse Box Replacement in Cliffe

Cliffe is the part of Lewes on the east bank of the Ouse, around Cliffe High Street, Harvey's brewery and the slopes of Cliffe Hill. Terraced houses, cottages and flats above shops sit close to the river here, so where the fuse box goes matters as much as what replaces it.

Small homes packed in between river and hill

Cliffe's housing is compact: older terraced houses and cottages on narrow streets, and flats above the shops along the High Street. Many have been altered several times, and boards are often squeezed into whatever corner was left, from a ground floor cupboard to the top of a stairwell. In a flat, the meter may be somewhere else entirely.

Smaller homes rarely need a large board. A dual RCD unit from £425 or an 8 way full RCBO board at £625 covers most flats and cottages here. Where meter tails have a long run up to a flat's board, their size and condition are checked during the work too.

Keeping the electrics above the waterline

Cliffe sits on low ground beside the Ouse, and it was among the parts of Lewes affected when the river flooded in October 2000. For ground floor homes it is sensible to think about where the consumer unit sits. A board mounted near floor level is one of the first things to be lost if water does get in, and one of the slowest to put right.

When we replace a board in a ground floor property here, we talk through fitting it higher up, with relocation adding £250 to the board change. Some owners also put the lower floor sockets on their own circuits so upstairs can be switched back on sooner after a flood. We explain the choices and you decide.

  • Board raised above likely flood level
  • Ground floor circuits kept separate
  • Relocation adds £250 with a new board
  • Meter moves referred to your supplier
Getting to you

Coming into Lewes from the east

We approach Cliffe along the A27 from Brighton & Hove, entering Lewes on its eastern side. Parking near the High Street is limited, so let us know what is available when you book. Board photos are all it takes to fix a price. With an urgent fault, a phone call is best, and a visit that day is our aim.

Not usually. Many flats above shops have the meter in a separate area, with tails running up to the flat's board. We need to reach both on the day, so if the meter is inside someone else's premises, ask them in advance. We check the tails and any isolator and include them in our testing.

If you can reach the main switch safely and without standing in water, switch off. Do not use sockets or switches that have been wet. Once the water has gone, the affected circuits need drying and testing before anything is reconnected, and a board that was under water should be replaced. We can test and advise once it is safe to enter.

Yes. Roads across the town close for the celebrations on the night, so we do not book work in Cliffe that evening. The days either side are normally fine. On short winter days we plan the start time so your power and lighting are back on before it gets dark.
