Older homes where wiring hides in floors and lofts
In a hamlet this small, many homes are older rural properties, with timber floors, roof spaces and outbuildings that cables have been threaded through over many years. It is not unusual to find a mixture of cable types, junctions buried under floorboards and connections nobody has looked at since the day they were made.
Our board change includes testing every circuit, which picks up most insulation and continuity problems. What a test cannot always catch is a connection that is loose but still working on the day, and that is where arc fault detection adds something.
- Mixed cable types identified
- Insulation and continuity tested
- Hidden junctions noted where found
- Arc fault option explained

Catching the faults that start fires quietly
An arc fault detection device, or AFDD, monitors a circuit for the electrical signature of arcing: the sparking that comes from a loose terminal, a nail through a cable or a flex crushed under furniture. Ordinary breakers respond to overloads and RCDs to leakage to earth, but neither is designed to spot this kind of fault.
An RCBO and AFDD board gives every circuit both kinds of protection, with prices starting at £1,095 for a 10 way board and £1,295 for a 14 way one. For a home with old timbers and long cable runs they are worth considering, and we explain the difference in plain terms and leave the choice with you.
- RCBO and AFDD, 10 ways £1,095
- RCBO and AFDD, 14 ways £1,295
- Suited to timber floors and lofts
- Surge protection still included

Asked in Didling
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691An RCD trips when current leaks to earth, for example through a person. An AFDD looks for arcing within the circuit itself, such as a loose connection heating up behind a socket. That kind of fault can start a fire without ever leaking to earth, so an RCD would not see it at all.
Not for most homes. The current wiring regulations require them on socket circuits in certain higher risk buildings, such as houses in multiple occupation, and recommend them elsewhere. For an owner occupied home in Didling they are a choice, and a sensible one to consider for older properties.
It is possible, and on a tighter budget it can make sense to protect socket circuits first. Our fixed prices cover full RCBO and AFDD boards, so for a mixed board we price it from your photos. We set out both options side by side so you can compare them before deciding.
