What a fuse box change looks like in a hamlet

With only a small number of properties, West Stoke has no estate of identical houses to compare against. Homes in hamlets like this are usually older, individual and altered over many years, sometimes with the meter and board tucked into a porch, cupboard or outbuilding. So that we understand the supply before quoting, we ask for a few pictures covering the board, the incoming cable and the meter.

Older boards in rural houses often leave some circuits without RCD protection, or rely on a single RCD that trips everything at once. Replacing the board brings every circuit under modern protection and gives you a certificate showing exactly what was tested and what the readings were.

Why surge protection matters on an exposed rural supply

Many homes at the foot of the Downs are fed by overhead lines crossing fields and running past trees. Lightning nearby and switching on the network can send short voltage spikes down those lines, and modern electronics, from boiler controls to broadband routers and televisions, are sensitive to them. A spike rarely makes a bang; more often something simply stops working.

A Type 2 surge protector is standard on each board we install, so it costs nothing extra when the consumer unit is replaced. If your board is fairly new and otherwise sound, surge protection can be retrofitted on its own for £165.

  • Type 2 surge protection included
  • Retrofit option at £165
  • Helps protect heating controls
  • Suited to overhead fed homes

On a rural overhead supply it is one of the more sensible additions. A surge device will not stop a direct lightning strike, but it limits the spikes that travel along the cables and can damage boilers, routers and appliances. It comes with every board we fit, and can be added to a sound existing board for £165.

Yes. A single board in a hamlet is a normal job for us, and the price is fixed before we book, with no travel charge. We plan the day so the installer arrives early with everything the job needs, leaving the full working day to fit, test and hand over.

We test every circuit before the new board is connected. If something fails, such as low insulation on an old lighting circuit, we stop, show you the reading and explain the options and the cost. Nothing extra is done without your agreement, and a faulty circuit can be left safely disconnected until a repair is arranged.
