We cover Gay Street, a small rural hamlet in the north of West Chiltington parish, south of Billingshurst. Old fuse boxes here are replaced at fixed prices, including in homes heated by electricity, where off peak circuits and storage heaters need sorting out as carefully as the main board.

Country homes and their heating circuits

Homes in a hamlet like Gay Street tend to be detached houses and cottages in their own grounds, each with its own history of improvements. Where there is no mains gas, heating and hot water may be electric, oil or LPG, and the electrical side of that, from immersion heaters to boiler and pump controls, all ends up at the board.

That makes choosing the right board important. Heating circuits are counted alongside everything else, and for a detached rural home the usual fit is an RCBO board of 10 to 12 ways, costing £695, so each heater or pump has protection of its own.

  • Immersion heater on its own way
  • Boiler or pump controls protected
  • Heating circuits clearly labelled
  • Board sized for the whole house

Off peak circuits that need their own care

Homes with storage heaters usually run on Economy 7 or a similar off peak tariff. Older installations often have two boards, one for everyday circuits and one switched by the meter or a timer for the storage heaters and immersion. The off peak board is frequently the older and more neglected of the pair.

We look at both. Depending on your meter and tariff, the off peak circuits may stay on their own small board or be arranged within a suitable new unit. Either way they get modern protection, and we explain the options before you book.

Getting to you

Up the lanes to Gay Street

To reach Gay Street we usually travel along the A27 and up the A283 to Storrington, then north through West Chiltington on the country lanes. If your house is hard to spot from the road, tell us what to look for. There is no charge for travel. A fixed price can be settled from a few board pictures, though a house with no power needs a phone call instead.

Still not sure?

Yes. They are reconnected and tested, and the off peak switching is checked so they still charge overnight. If the heaters themselves are old or faulty, we will mention it, although they are not part of the board price. Many people find the whole arrangement much clearer once both sets of circuits are properly labelled.

Usually not. Immersion heater elements can start leaking current to earth as they age, and an RCD is designed to trip when that happens. Older boards without RCD protection simply never noticed. We test the element when we change the board, and if it is the cause, we tell you so it can be replaced.

Clear a path to the board and the meter, and tell us where any outbuilding supplies run. If you have a freezer, keep the door shut while the power is off and it will hold its temperature for the few hours involved. Charge phones and laptops the night before, and we will bring everything else.
