Where old fuse boxes tend to linger

In a hamlet the size of Slough Green, homes are few, and the electrical installation in a quiet rural property can go many years without anyone looking at it closely. That is where we still come across rewireable fuses, brown or black plastic fuse boxes and no RCD protection at all, quietly doing their job until something goes wrong.

Rewireable fuses are slow to react and give none of the shock protection an RCD provides. A modern board changes that. For many smaller homes, a six way board with dual RCD protection at £425 upwards does the job, and the earthing and bonding are checked before it goes live.

  • Rewireable fuses removed
  • RCD protection added
  • Earthing and bonding verified
  • Results explained in plain terms

Board or full rewire?

An old fuse box does not always mean a rewire

Owners of older rural homes often assume that an ancient fuse box means the whole house needs rewiring. Frequently it does not. If the cables are PVC insulated and test well, the circuits can stay where they are and only the board is replaced. The way to find out is to insulation test each circuit, which we do as standard on every board change.

If we find rubber insulated cable, lead sheathed wiring or circuits that fail testing, we tell you straight away and show you the readings. You then decide whether to rewire those circuits before the new board is fitted. Nothing extra is done without your agreement.

  • Every circuit insulation tested
  • Readings shared with you
  • Old cable types identified
  • Rewiring only where truly needed

An existing rewireable fuse box is not illegal, but it does not meet the current wiring regulations and gives no RCD protection. It also makes it easy for someone to fit the wrong fuse wire, which can let a cable overheat without the fuse blowing. Replacing it is one of the most effective safety upgrades for an older home.

Count the fuses on your current board and add a few for the future. A small cottage might get by on six ways with dual RCDs, priced from £425, while a larger home, or one planning a heat pump or car charger, is better served by 10 ways or more. We recommend a size once we have seen your photos.

Usually not, because the work is all on your side of the meter. UK Power Networks only needs to be involved if the cut-out where the supply enters is damaged, or the main fuse is too small for what you want to add. If either applies, we explain exactly what to ask them for before the board change goes ahead.
