A village within Ashdown Forest

Fuse Box Replacement in Fairwarp

Heath, woodland and scattered houses make up Fairwarp, a small village on Ashdown Forest in Maresfield parish, north of Uckfield. Storms here can bring branches down on power lines, so we think about what happens when the power fails as well as how the board is wired.

Houses among the trees

Forest homes, each wired its own way

Fairwarp is a scattered village rather than a tight cluster, with houses set back among the trees and heath of the forest. Homes here are mostly individual buildings of different ages and styles, so there is no standard fuse box to expect. You might have rewirable fuses, an early plastic board, or a mix left behind by piecemeal upgrades.

Whatever we find, the replacement is the same careful job: every circuit identified, tested and connected to a steel board with RCD protection throughout and Type 2 surge protection. Choose RCBOs instead, from £625 for an 8 way board, and each circuit has protection of its own instead of sharing.

  • Old fuse wire gone for good
  • Early plastic boards replaced
  • Earth leakage protection on all circuits
  • Steel enclosure fitted

When the weather takes the power down

In a wooded place like Fairwarp, high winds can bring branches down onto overhead lines, and a power cut follows. If the whole area is off, that is a network fault: call 105, the free power cut number, to reach UK Power Networks. If only your home is off and something on the board has tripped, the problem lies inside the property.

When power returns, a board with one or two RCDs can trip as appliances restart together or as a damp outdoor fitting makes itself known, cutting off half the house. On an RCBO board only the faulty circuit goes off, so the freezer and heating stay on while you find the cause.

  • Network faults reported on 105
  • RCBOs isolate a single fault
  • Freezer and heating kept separate
  • Outdoor circuits properly protected

Fairwarp questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Switch off every circuit breaker, reset the RCD, then switch the breakers back on one at a time. The one that trips it again points to the faulty circuit, which you can leave off for now. If nothing will reset, or you notice a burning smell, do not touch the board again and ring us during opening hours.

Look at your neighbours and at your board. If nearby houses are dark too, or nothing on your board has tripped, it is likely a network fault, so call 105 for UK Power Networks. If neighbours have power and a switch on your board is down, the fault is in your installation and we can help.

Yes. On a full RCBO board every circuit has its own device, so a fault elsewhere will not switch off the circuit your freezer is on. If the freezer sits in a garage or utility room, we can check that it has a suitable dedicated supply. Full RCBO boards start at £625.
