Westergate homes, old boards and new
Along the main road and in the older parts of the village, boards range from original fuse boxes to plastic consumer units from the 1980s and 1990s, often without the RCD protection now expected on every circuit. Those are the homes where a replacement makes the biggest difference: fewer nuisance trips, proper shock protection and a metal enclosure.
Houses built in the last decade or so usually have a modern board with RCD protection already. For those we check what is there and, if it is sound, suggest only what is missing, which can be as simple as a surge protection retrofit at £165.
- Original fuse boxes replaced
- 1980s and 1990s boards upgraded
- Newer boards assessed honestly
- Surge retrofit £165

When a newer board needs only a small change
Westergate has seen new housing in recent years, and a home that is only a few years old should not need a new consumer unit. What it may lack, if the board predates the 2019 wiring regulations, is surge protection. Other reasons to call us about a newer home include adding circuits for an EV charger, a garden room or a heat pump.
Send a clear photo with the cover closed, showing the labels, and we can usually tell whether the board is suitable. If it is, we quote only for the addition. If it is not, for example a board with no spare ways left, we will explain why a replacement is the better option.
- Newer boards checked from photos
- Surge protection retrofitted
- Spare ways for new circuits
- Replacement only when justified
Westergate call outs and bookings
Our installers travel out from Brighton & Hove along the A27 to Fontwell and then a short distance south on the A29 into Westergate. Felpham lies beyond, to the south. Bookings can be made by phone on any day of the week, and for a board that has failed or smells of burning, a same day call-out is the aim wherever possible.

Asked in Westergate
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Since the current wiring regulations came into force in 2019, surge protection has been expected in most homes, and boards installed shortly before that often left it out. Where the existing board has room and is compatible, a Type 2 device can be added for £165. Every board we fit as new includes one as standard.
Sometimes. A heat pump needs its own suitably rated circuit, and the board must have space and the right type of protection for it, plus enough headroom on the main fuse. Send us a picture of the board plus the heat pump details and you will hear whether it can cope or whether a replacement, from £425, makes more sense.
An AFDD, or arc fault detection device, looks for the distinctive pattern of current that arcing produces, from a picture hook nail through a cable to a loose terminal, and cuts the circuit before the heat can build into a fire. For most homes the current regulations recommend AFDDs rather than make them compulsory, and our RCBO plus AFDD boards begin at £1,095 with 10 ways.
