Older village houses and big postwar estates
The older part of Fishbourne lies along the main road and down towards the harbour, but much of the village was built from the 1950s onwards as Chichester spread west. Those estates of semis, bungalows and family houses were wired in the era of fuse boxes and, later, the first plastic consumer units, and many of those boards have since been patched rather than replaced.
A fixed price board change sorts out the patchwork in one visit. Out come the old fuse carriers and any add on units, in goes a new board carrying Type 2 surge protection, then the whole installation is tested before the power goes back on.
- 1950s to 1990s boards replaced
- Add on units removed
- Whole house tested
- Surge protection fitted

Why a single RCD board catches people out
Homes built or rewired in the 1980s and 1990s, around Chichester as much as anywhere, often have a split load board: one RCD protects some circuits and the rest have none. A fault on a protected circuit trips everything on that side, frequently the sockets and the fridge freezer together. Meanwhile the unprotected circuits, typically lighting, have no RCD cover at all.
For £425 upwards, a dual RCD board brings every circuit under RCD protection. Spend from £625 on a full RCBO board and each circuit is protected on its own, so one fault can never plunge the whole house into darkness.
- Every circuit RCD protected
- No more half house trips
- Dual RCD from £425
- RCBOs from £625
Quick to reach from the A27
Fishbourne is right on the western edge of Chichester with the A27 running past it, so it is one of the easiest villages in the district for us to reach from Brighton & Hove, about 30 miles away. A failed board is treated as urgent and we try to get there the same day. Planned upgrades can usually be booked within days of a photo quote.

Asked in Fishbourne
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691It is not automatically dangerous, but it falls short of current standards because some circuits have no RCD protection. It is also inconvenient, as one fault switches off everything on the protected side. An inspection would normally flag it, and replacing the board is the usual fix. Swapping in a dual RCD board costs from £425.
A dual RCD board splits your circuits into two groups, each behind one RCD, so a fault trips its whole group. An RCBO board gives every circuit its own combined RCD and breaker, so only the faulty circuit goes off. RCBO boards cost more, from £625, but they suit homes with a home office, a freezer full of food or medical equipment.
Someone needs to let us in and be around at the end, when we show you the new board and talk through the test results. In between, most people simply get on with their day. The work usually takes 4 to 6 hours, with the electricity off for much of it.
