Old houses, careful work

Period homes with wiring from many decades

Older houses in Fletching have usually been rewired in parts rather than all at once, so it is common to find modern cable alongside older runs, lighting circuits without an earth, and a board that has been changed or extended more than once. Thick walls, timber frames and old plaster also mean the route of each cable matters.

We work out what each circuit feeds before disconnecting anything, and we fit the new board without chasing or cutting into historic walls wherever that can be avoided. If testing finds wiring that needs attention, we show you the results and talk through options rather than starting work you have not agreed.

  • Mixed old and new wiring tested
  • Unearthed lighting circuits flagged
  • No unnecessary chasing
  • Results explained before extra work

Changing a board in a listed house

Fletching has a long history: Simon de Montfort's army is said to have camped nearby before the Battle of Lewes in 1264, and many buildings in the village are listed. Replacing a consumer unit in the same position is usually treated as a like for like change, but anything that alters historic fabric, such as a new cable route through old walls, may need listed building consent.

If you are thinking of moving the board, we discuss the route with you first so you can check with the council's conservation officer if needed. We reuse existing routes where possible and keep fixings to a minimum. Arc fault protection, from £1,095 for a 10 way board, is worth considering in older timber framed homes.

  • Existing cable routes reused
  • Minimal fixings into old fabric
  • Relocation discussed in advance
  • Arc fault protection available

Fletching questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

It should not. In most cases the new board goes where the old one was, using the same cable entries, so nothing visible changes beyond a neater metal unit. If anything would affect the historic fabric, such as a new cable route, we raise it before starting so you can check whether consent is needed.

Often it can. Moving the board when we fit a new one adds £250, and we will suggest positions that keep it accessible but out of sight, such as a cupboard or utility room. In an older house we look at the cable route carefully first, because a short move can be simple while a longer one may not be.

Very little in most cases. Swapping a board in the same position means working at the unit itself, not on the walls around the house. We use dust sheets, keep drilling to the fixing points and take the old board away. If testing suggests any cable needs replacing, we discuss how to do it with the least disturbance.
