Old cottages and newer homes, very different boards
Like many High Weald villages, Staplecross has older cottages, some clad in tile hanging or weatherboarding, alongside houses built during the last century. The two tend to have very different installations. A cottage may still have a fuse box with rewireable fuses and cables threaded through old timbers, while a later house is more likely to have an early consumer unit lacking full RCD cover.
Either way, the upgrade follows the same steps: a full test of the existing wiring, a new board with every circuit protected, and a certificate to keep with your house documents. If testing shows that a circuit is not fit to reconnect, we explain why before going any further.
- Rewireable fuses removed
- Early consumer units upgraded
- Cables in old timbers inspected
- Certificate for your house file

Arc fault protection for timber framed homes
An arc fault is a small, persistent spark caused by a damaged cable, a loose connection or a worn flex. It can go unnoticed by a fuse, an MCB or an RCD, yet in a building with a timber frame or plenty of exposed wood, it is exactly the kind of fault you want caught early. Arc fault detection devices, known as AFDDs, are designed to find it.
The current wiring regulations recommend AFDDs for many homes, and they are well worth considering where a house is built from or around timber. Pairing RCBOs with AFDDs, a 10 way board is £1,095 and a 14 way board is £1,295. You will get a straight answer on whether your home would benefit.

- Loose terminations remade

Asked in Staplecross
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691An arc fault detection device watches the electrical signature of a circuit for the pattern produced by arcing, such as from a damaged cable or a loose terminal. When it recognises that pattern, it disconnects the circuit. It works alongside RCD and overcurrent protection, covering a type of fault they were never designed to pick up.
Old fuse boxes were often fixed to wooden backboards, and the boxes themselves may be wood or metal. Current regulations require consumer units in homes to have a non combustible enclosure, so the boards we fit are metal. We remove the old equipment entirely, which lowers the fire risk if anything inside were ever to overheat.
Rarely for a straight board change. The new unit usually goes where the old one was, connected to the existing circuits. If the board has to move, or a cable is too short to reach, we agree the route with you first and keep any disturbance small. In older cottages we take extra care around plaster and timber.
