Rural plots, more than one building

Homes with garages, workshops and annexes

Like other hamlets in the parish, Coldharbour is a small number of rural homes rather than a place with streets. Country properties like these often have more than one building on the plot: a detached garage, a workshop, stables, a garden office or a converted annex. Over time each tends to be connected back to the house, and the fuse box ends up carrying the lot.

That is why we ask for photos of anything outside with power, not just the board in the house. Knowing what the outbuildings draw, and how they are fed, lets us size the new consumer unit properly and give each outside supply the right protection.

  • Board sized for the whole plot

Getting power safely to the buildings outside

Supplies to outbuildings are a common weak spot in older rural installations. Some were run in ordinary twin and earth cable clipped along a fence or buried without protection, and some outbuildings have a small board of their own fed from the house with no RCD at either end. Changing the consumer unit in the house is the natural time to put that right.

We test each outside supply, check the cable type and route, and look at how the outbuilding is earthed, which matters on rural supplies. If a cable needs replacing with armoured cable, we explain why and agree it with you separately; the price of the board itself stays fixed.

  • Submain cables tested
  • Outbuilding boards checked
  • RCD protection at the house
  • Armoured cable where needed

Include your full postcode when you text your photos. This Coldharbour is in Hurst Green parish with a TN19 postcode, but there are others elsewhere, and the postcode is what we plan the visit around. We do not charge for travel anywhere in Sussex, so getting the address right is the only thing that matters.

Not necessarily. If it is in good condition and the supply from the house is suitable, it can often stay, protected by the new board in the house. We test it either way. If it is old, unprotected or damaged, we tell you and suggest a replacement or a different arrangement before doing anything.

It often is. With a dual RCD board, a fault in a damp workshop can trip half the house as well. With RCBOs, each circuit, including each outside supply, has its own protection, so a problem in one building stays there. An 8 way RCBO board is £625 and 10 to 12 ways is £695.
