A village of many decades

Older cottages and twentieth century homes

Ashurst Wood is a proper village rather than a scattered hamlet, with older cottages sitting alongside family houses built through the twentieth century and since. Boards here range from original fuse boxes with rewireable fuses to plastic consumer units from the 1990s and 2000s, many relying on one or two RCDs to cover the whole house.

For a small cottage, six ways of dual RCD protection at £425 may be plenty, whereas a family house running a dozen circuits is better suited to RCBOs across 10 to 12 ways, from £695. We work out the number of ways from your photos, allowing room for anything you plan to add.

Keeping the work from home circuits on

If you work from home in Ashurst Wood, whether at the kitchen table or in a garden studio, a board that trips everything at once is more than an inconvenience. On an older split load board, one fault can take out the router, the computer and the freezer together, and garden offices are often fed by a cable added long after the house was wired.

With a full RCBO board, a fault stays on the one circuit where it starts, leaving everything else in the house, your connection included, still running. Standard Type 2 surge protection helps shield computers and routers, and for extra fire protection an RCBO and AFDD board, from £1,095, adds arc fault detection.

  • Faults confined to one circuit
  • Garden office feeds tested
  • Surge protection for electronics
  • AFDD boards from £1,095

A dual RCD board splits your circuits into two groups, each protected by one RCD, so a fault trips every circuit in that group. A full RCBO board gives each circuit its own combined breaker and RCD, so only the faulty circuit goes off. Dual RCD boards start at £425 and full RCBO boards at £625.

A typical board change takes 4 to 6 hours, with the supply off for most of that time, so working elsewhere for the day, or sticking to tasks a charged laptop and phone can manage, is usually simplest. We agree the start time with you in advance and switch everything back on once testing is complete.

No. There is no legal requirement for an owner occupier to replace a fuse box that still works. Even so, it offers no RCD protection against electric shock, new circuits generally cannot be added without that protection, and in England a landlord must have the installation inspected no less often than every five years. Replacing it is a safety upgrade rather than a legal duty.
