New town neighbourhoods, old boards

Fuse Box Replacement in Crawley

Much of Crawley was built as a planned new town from the late 1940s onwards, neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Many of those houses are on their second or third fuse board, and some are still on their first. We replace them at fixed prices, test every circuit and certify the work.

Built in stages, wired in stages

The earliest new town neighbourhoods, West Green, Northgate and Three Bridges among them, were followed by Langley Green, Ifield, Pound Hill, Southgate, Tilgate, Gossops Green and Furnace Green. Later came Broadfield, Bewbush and Maidenbower, and most recently Forge Wood. That means terraces, maisonettes and semis from every decade since the war, alongside the older houses of the original village around the High Street.

In the oldest new town homes the original wiring has often been partly replaced over the years, with newer cables joined to old ones. When we change a board in these houses, the inspection matters as much as the new unit, because it shows which circuits are sound. Where cables are tired, we say so plainly.

  • 1950s and 1960s neighbourhood homes
  • Maisonettes and low rise flats
  • Former council houses
  • Mixed old and new cabling checked
  • Metal clad units to current rules
  • Maidenbower and Forge Wood homes too

Airport workers, shared houses and buy to lets

Gatwick and the Manor Royal business district bring a steady demand for rented rooms and homes in Crawley. Shift workers, contractors and young professionals share houses across the neighbourhoods, and many former council homes are now owned by landlords. A shared house with several tenants puts heavy use on kitchens, showers and heaters, which an old board can struggle to handle safely.

For HMOs our standalone EICR starts from £350, or £99 when booked with a board change. We can work around shift patterns and let tenants know exactly when the power will be off. Every board we fit is sized for the real number of circuits in the house, with spare ways, so a new tenant's appliances or an extra heater will not overload it. Paperwork goes straight to you or your agent.

Why so many Crawley boards are due

Houses built in the 1950s and 1960s were wired for a very different way of living: a few sockets per room, a cooker and an immersion heater. Since then, most have gained electric showers, kitchen appliances, extra sockets and often a garage or extension circuit. Many were rewired at some point, but the boards fitted during those rewires are now themselves several decades old, often plastic and without full RCD protection.

A modern board with RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit, plus surge protection, brings these homes up to the current BS 7671 standard without a full rewire, as long as the testing shows the cables are in good order. It is often the most cost effective safety upgrade a new town homeowner can make, and it lasts for decades.

  • Full RCD protection on every circuit
  • Old plastic boards replaced
  • Shower and cooker circuits checked
  • Bonding to gas and water verified
  • Faults found and explained clearly
  • No rewire unless testing shows a need

Crawley callouts, same day where possible

Crawley is straight up the A23 from our Brighton base, which makes it one of the easier towns for us to reach quickly. If your board is tripping and will not reset, or you can see scorch marks or smell burning, call us between 8am and 8pm. We aim to attend the same day where possible and will help you make things safe over the phone first.

Planned board changes are booked at a time that suits you. Most take 4 to 6 hours, and we confirm the day before so you can plan around it. On the day we explain what we are doing, label every circuit clearly and show you how the new board works.

Not necessarily. Many homes of that age were rewired at some point, and the cables may be in perfectly good condition. We test every circuit as part of the board change, so you will find out exactly what state the wiring is in. If a circuit fails its tests we will explain the result and give you a price to fix it, rather than recommending a rewire by default.

Yes. Tell us roughly when people are sleeping or at work and we will plan the day around it. The power is only off for the part of the job when we swap the board, and we let everyone know in advance. Most boards take 4 to 6 hours in total, and we can supply the HMO EICR at the same visit.

Many former council homes had their boards replaced during planned upgrades, but some of those units are now old themselves and may not have RCD protection on every circuit. Others have been altered by previous owners. Text us a photo of the board and the label inside the cover, and we can usually tell you its age and whether it is worth replacing.

A board from the 1990s was fine for its time but often protects only the socket circuits with an RCD, leaving lighting and other circuits without it. It will also be a plastic unit and has no surge protection. Many owners upgrade when adding a car charger or a new kitchen. A dual RCD 10 way board starts from £495.

Often, yes. Moving the board at the same time as replacing it adds £250 to the board price, and a standalone relocation is £395. In maisonettes and flats the meter position and the route of the supply cables affect what is possible, so send us photos of the board, the meter and where you would like it to go.
