Few neighbours, very individual houses
There is no village street at Wych Cross, just a small number of homes spread around the junction and along the forest roads. Properties like these have usually been altered and extended by successive owners, so the board on the wall may be feeding wiring from several different eras, some of it added without much thought for the whole.
That is why we never simply swap the box. Every circuit is tested, odd spurs and extensions are traced back, and anything doubtful is explained with a photo. Expect £495 for dual RCD protection over 10 ways, or £695 for RCBOs on 10 to 12.

One fault should not darken the whole house
Many boards fitted in the 1990s and 2000s put several circuits behind one shared RCD. A single fault, perhaps a damp outside light or a failing appliance, can then switch off lights, sockets and heating controls together. In a remote spot on the forest, especially on a winter night, that is more than an inconvenience.
With an RCBO for every circuit, a fault stays where it begins and everything else in the house carries on working. It also makes tracking down the cause much quicker, whether you or we are doing it.
- One RCBO per circuit
- Heating stays on if a light trips
- Faults easier to pin down
- Type 2 surge protection included
Wych Cross is easy to find
Few places are simpler to reach. From Brighton & Hove we take the A27 to Lewes and follow the A275 north until it ends at the A22 junction. From East Grinstead it is a short drive south through Forest Row. The trip costs you nothing, and losing power puts you at the front of the queue for a same day visit.

Asked in Wych Cross
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691An RCD watches for current leaking to earth and switches off a whole group of circuits when it finds some. An RCBO does the same job and also protects against overload, but for one circuit only. A board full of RCBOs costs more, from £625 for 8 ways, but limits the disruption when something goes wrong.
Leave it off rather than forcing it. Unplug appliances, switch off the breakers on that side of the board and try again, then turn circuits back on one at a time. If it still trips, there is probably a fault, often on outside lighting or sockets exposed to damp. That is the moment to give us a ring, and we will look to come out on the same day.
Someone needs to let us in, show us the board and be around at the end so we can walk you through the certificate and the new labels. In between, carry on with your day as you like; the supply is only off for part of the 4 to 6 hours most boards take.
